Honestly the main reason Live and Plus are alive, i think is that Sony and microsoft have monopoly on there system, i cant see the point for that on Steam
There is no need for it.
We got all the abilities that Xbox Live offer and PS Plus have.
We have Free Weekends where one games gets free to play during the weekend.
We got a lot of sales which is something console users often never see.
We got achievement, worthless they might be but we still have them.
So what exactly would they add to justify it?
You can play online for free
you get major discounts, discounts that XBLA and PSN wouldnt ever dream to give
You get preorder discounts on some AAA titles
You get (or will get if not beta) free gameplay stream
You get free weekends
You even get free games every now and then....
Give ONE good reason why i should pay a subscription for Steam.... There´s nothing Steam could offer at this moment for a payed subscriber, and making any of the current features "pay to use" would be just a stupid thing to do.
What benefits would be bestowed upon me? Xbox Live used to suck you in with "Hey we have Netflix" and other services if you had Gold. But even that now is avaialbe to all users on Xbox. On the PC I can watch Netflix you know because it's a PC! Steam isn't gating me to with some kind of "You can only watch Netflix on Steam" sort of nonsense.
The open infrastructure of the PC means that they'll have problems providing a value add that would make people want to pay a subscrption. Sure it woudl be nice if say Spotify was on BPM. But again, its a PC, so I can just run the Spotify client and do stuff. Steam provides no value add by providing this 'conveneince' to me and I'm sure as hell not going to pay a subscription just so I can get Spotify on BPM.
To me though Steam pretty much provides all the benefits PS+ does but for free already. It feels like a step backwards to segregate the PC community that way.
I hear you. I just don't see the harm if it is an additional optional system that doesn't take anything away from what users currently get. If I could get access to a random assortment of free-ish games a month, extra discounts, special promo events and betas, for under $5 a month I know I would sign up. I see how it could worry other users though as there would be the fear that it could go to practically mandatory from optional like it did going from the PS3 to the PS4.
I feel though that it would be inherently exclusionary. Steam already does free weekends, free games, free multiplayer, free super-uber discounts for everyone. I'd hate to see it like "Free Weekend!*" *- For Steam Premium Users Only Sukah! Or "Summer Sale!"** **-If you're a Premium User
I guess the reality is that Steam has already set the precedent that stuff is free for the service itself. So a subscription will inherently feel like a step backwards.
PS. Off topic= I wish my avatar read better visually... your name made me think of changing it to something but I cant find a good avatar that reads well this small
I see what you're saying, but I feel iit would enhance many of those existing features. Take the free weekends for example. There could be at least one a month for all users, but the rest of the month steam could use some of the subscription revenue to pay studios to make free weekends or demos. Same with the sales. Subscription guys get an extra 5% off on all sales or something similar. Obviously it would have to be done in a manner similar to this as to not encroach on features that regular users currently get.
Free weekends are done BY the developers in an attempt to boost the sale of the game. They are banking on if users LIKE the game when it was free, they will buy it when it's not. Steam really doesn't have a say in this issue. Charging more would make steam do what exactly?
Again no one is calling for the removal of any current features users already have access to. The subscription fee would be used to enhance things not move them behind a paywall.
