We need a new tag, "Dayz clone"....
Keep things a bit more organized, this way we can seperate Dayz clones from the rest of the survival games and zombie games.

im not hating, just pointing this trend, its getting a bit tiresome tbh.

I understand the appeal of these games (i, myself play BP mod for arma 3), but the market is oversaturated with these things. im starting to believe indie devs and such would actually be more successful trying something new/ coming up with a different style of game. Rather than try to compete with the many other similar games, all vying for the same audience.

Yea, i really enjoyed DayZ and i could get behind this. Im all for clearity when sifting through the store. :)
Dayz is hardly the only game with this trait. Every FPS is a Doom clone. A ton of action RPG's are Diablo clones. Very few games out there are actually unique.

I agree, a few are unique innovations. It seems to be a trend to just reskin and retexture everything and say it's new. I remember the early(game) programmers considering this issue in the 80's .

Tags are more there to help users find games there interested in, then to give info abut it
So maybe tagging them all as some survival type game can work
But a Dayz clone.. i do not think is a great tag

What better way to help find people the games their interested in than describing the game to them? i see it as a way to make the tag system a bit more helpful

as for the tag name....eh, we have walking simulator...i dont see why not for Dayz clone, unless there is legal issues for using the name

this happens all the time of course, whether its all for the bandwagon cashgrab or because devs simply like the creative spark to try something new, the games are here to stay tho, even if trends move on to something else

Yes, although DayZ really did get the idea rolling. calling all FPS games "Doom clones" however, id consider a bit more on the genre of game rather than then style/mechanics of it, Besides the idea of running around a map and shooting things (which is practically the definition of FPS genre) can you honestly call DOOM and say, Titanfall, Battlefield or the latest COD game similar?

im not trying to hate or disagree with you here, im just trying to keep the discussion alive

Exactly, in my honest opinion the tag system could use a bit of cleaning up.

Of course, I dont even know how tags become globally used tags...

And this is why Steam had to manually curate tags....

Pretty much, yea. All FPS games are pretty much Doom clones...they might add a mechanic here or there like multiplayer. But they are still Doom clones at heart. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Doom was pretty much a clone of Wolfenstein.

If we label games Dayz clones...do we have to label the Diablo clones? How about labeling the 2D platformers as Mario clones? How about labeling all survival build em ups as Minecraft clones? Do we label most 3rd person shooters as RE4 clones too?

I guess my point is....where does it end? Most games are clones. I don't care much for Dayz or its clones...bu tthat is why I just stop looking at them when I see 'multiplayer survival/ free for all' style games. I feel like they should be labeled as troll simulators myself.

It ends where the community decides it ends, same as the usage of any other genre label. None of us "have to" do anything, but people who do use a certain label can apply it as a tag. No different to the way tags like "FPS" or "RPG" or "Puzzle" work.
