Steam avatars?
like the xbox or wii, it would be cool to have characters that we can customize with content from developers and clothing items could be available on the market or available for purchase on a games store page, not only will valve be able to profit from this but the characters could be used in games to have more unique content available to each person

How would they make profit? We can upload our own avatar already. Can't get more customizable then that, unless you want to lose the ability to upload your own avatar.

As there are no games that would make use of the avatar to begin with, using it in-game is kind of moot as well.

I mean similar to mii characters stuff like that and then game devs could implement clothing items for their games thaty could be sold and valve could get a cut of the sales

Don't give them any ideas. Taking away functionality is currently in vogue.

And the only way that could work is by denying users the ability to upload ANY avatar of their own.
These kind of avatars only work because they are a control scheme (to avoid users from uploading/making inappropriate avatars)
You can only pick one:
-Ability to upload your avatar pic.
-Customizable avatars with purchasable addons.

Both together they simply don't work.

I like the idea as long as they keep it optional; however, I don't see this happening anytime soon until multiple games start appearing on Steam that use a Steam-specific avatar. If the avatar was a developer/publisher-specific thing then there would be no need for Steam to become involved.

The best chance of this happening would be for a bunch of Indie games that aren't really related to each other but can agree on something like this. Steam's incentive at this point would be to handle accessories for avatars much like they (Valve) do(es) hats in Team Fortress 2. Bring it this far and I can see Steam being properly incentivized.
