Stricter requirements for "controller support"
I see many games that are supposed to have "full controller support", but in fact only support the Xbox 360 controller. This outrageous deceit is absolutely not acceptable. A game should only be regarded as having full controller support -- nay, as having controller support at all -- if it supports generic USB game controllers.

Most games today only support XInput. That's simply the reality of the situation. Most controllers sold today from 3rd parties are Xinput ones. That's the reality.

Full controller support is valid for it's context. It allows the users to launch and play the entire game via the controller.

BPM already has some kind of Xinput emulator for DirectInput controllers if you really need to use one. But again Xinput is the new 'standard' whether you like it or not. Don't like it? Scream at MS for replacing DirectInput with Xinput.
Xinput is Microsoft's attempt to kill a whole industry (game accessories) and all of its legacy, to replace it with its own (Microsoft-licensed game accessories). It is a pity that antitrust case in the 90s didn't break up Microsoft as they should have, this sort of behavior is absolutely unethical and completely unacceptable.
Full/Partial support has little to do with what types of controller it supports but instead how the game can be controlled with a controller. If a game can be started and fully ran using only a controller, or if you must start it instead with a KB/Mouse and then can use a controller later while in game.

Xinput has coincided with an increased availability of controller supported games on the PC. One can argue cause/effect all day... but the two line up nicely.

More like a glut of lazy X360-to-PC ports without proper (non-Xinput) controller support.

That has nothing to do with it

The tag accurately describes its intended function

Not meeting your narrow criteria isn't what it's for

My "narrow criteria" is not artificially breaking compatibility with a world of devices that are already out there for the benefit of one company. Is this unreasonable?
There is no "world of devices" those died out long ago when Xinput became the standard API when the Xbox was released

You can ignore reality but that doesn't make it true

Full controller support simply means you can use the controller to launch and play the game. That's it. That's what it means. There is no need to change the meaning to include DirectInput devices since they haven't been relevant in over a decade

Heh, there are controllers in existence that are not made by Microsoft that use XInput.
""I see many games that are supposed to have "full controller support", but in fact only support the Xbox 360 controller"", < i wish, i have used my xbox 360 controller for many years on xbox 360 and pc games without problems.
left and right sticks work together, ls for moving and rs for looking and aiming and moving direction, so you can imagine my suprise and rage when i purchased re4 hd which btw claimed full controller support, pffff
yes it supports controller use, but even a 360 controller can not be config to work as it does on xbox or most other games. (see above)
if steam controller support means only that "" a game can be started and fully ran using only a controller"" then its not much use to gamers who use controllers on pc games .

clearly this means steam needs a new check box for gamers who buy a game and expect to use their controller to play and control the game as their controller does on most games.
if steam cares about gamers then they should try harder to supply more information about the products they sell,
having full controller support should mean just that > full control ***

It has full support, there is no need for a keyboard and mouse
And there is a controler support

It may not work well, but its there...

If it does not support USB HID devices, it is not there. Period.

Again there are literally no games released on the PC since the original Xbox that uses DirectInput. You can stick your head in the sand and pretend the world stopped when the Xbox came out. But reality doesn't work that way.
You would also begin to think that they are not using a PC and have not conceived the idea that there are many open source programs that wrap all manner of control systems to XInput.

Now you're just being silly. Many recent PC games that support generic controllers. Just a few from my very modest collection that I could check: Sonic & All-Star Racing Transformed, NiGHTS into dreams, Fez, Trine, AVGN Adventures, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Hawken, Red Faction: Armageddon, Freedom Planet, The Expendabros, Treasure Adventure Game, Cave Story Plus, Super Meat Boy.

It's called "giving a damn".

Many don't work, though. It's called "incompetence".
Or buy an xbox 360 controller and solve all of your problems.
