Option to disable Windows System Tray Steam Icon
In Windows, I want Steam to quit when I close the Steam client window, not continue running as a System Tray app.

It can be done on the Steam client with Steam > Exit, on the top-left of your window.
And people often click on the X to let Steam do its updates while hidden, AFAIK.

you can also right click the tray app and then exit

I know how to quit Steam. I want the tray icon to not appear in the first place.

That can be done in the system tray options of the OS.

Windows can temporarily hide system tray icons, but the associated programs will continue running in the background, and no Windows setting can change that.

I don't want Steam to run in the background.

I don't want Steam to run in the background.
So do not exit with the X exit with the menu Exit Steam is we say before...
You asking to add something that i think almost no one will use.... so why will Valve want to work on it?

Many programs with system tray icons offer users the option of disabling their tray icons entirely. BitTorrent and OpenOffice do this, for example. I just want Steam to join their ranks.

Out of interest, what is the problem with Steam running as a background task?

It's a bit of a memory hog. When it updates a game, it makes browsing noticably slower.

I opened Taskmanager up and watched the Steam process while it's minimized, and it seems to sit at around 95-100Mb memory usage, and 0% CPU usage. And 100Mb is just about nothing these days.

Not in a virtual machine.

Steam -> Exit

Are you guys trolling? I've expressed myself as clearly as I can: I want Valve to add an option to the Steam client in Windows to completely disable the system tray icon.

Again that's nto what you want

You want it to not run in the background (which has nothing to do with the system tray icon)

Steam->Exit is what you want.
