I can almost guarantee it will never happen.
Why?
It would just be another generic action movie. Half-Life's story is bad. Science Dude opens portal by accident, aliens invade, military is trying to cover it up by killing everony. Science Dude saves the day and meets some completely out of place mysterious figure for a cliffhanger.
Half-Life 2 is just as bad: Science Dude returns and helps the resistance to free a city from an inexplicable alien invasion. Saves the day by shutting down a portal that another science dude opened this time. Add a tangent visist to a zombie infested village and make half the movie a road trip with a garden gnome. (Yeah, I know the later was an episode, but still).
Literally every single sci fi movie is terrible and the same plot.
Every single one.
All movies are Westerns; black hat, white hat, this town ain't big enough for the two of us.
The *visuals* and the selling power of Half Life, on the other hand, would certainly draw a lot more attention than its barebones plot.
I mean, people complain that Dishonored 2 isn't 'as good' as 1, but ... there was literally no story told in that game at all - it all came out in the dlc and in 2.
The visuals? What visual? The game has no bearance on how the movie will look. (And even if, HL is rather bland anyway). You could have said the same about DOOM. Or Assassin's Creed. A good franchise doesn't make for a good movie.
There are fundamental differences between movies and games. A game can be carried by it's game play and how much the player is engaged within it. A movie is a completely passive experience. The big boss battle in end? Who cares, it's all decided anyway, the good guys will win. Your favourite character dying in the middle of the movie? Who cares, you haven't had any bonding with them anyway.
I mean: it's the flavor, not the visuals specifically from the game. They're 20 years old, yes they've weathered a bit. But given what can be done in games OR movies (generally speaking one in the same now) the instant-recognition factor is important.
The plot doesn't have to be more than "revenge". I mean, kill bill is a thing that existed at the same time as the Matrix. "survive" is not an uncommon theme.
Or did you just never see Alien? Same plot as Half Life. But you'd be able to distinguish it instantly on seeing a combine face mask or a vortigaunt green energy strike.
I don't know who this Brian Cranston guy is? but if HL gets made into a movie it would be cool
