Avatar Image Quality
Would be nice if Steam didn't compress uploaded avatars so much. Right now i've got jpeg artifacts all over my profile image and it's making me sad.
Thanks.

They don't have unlimited server space to store millions of HD user avatar images on. This is Valve, not Google / Microsoft.

Well they seem to have space for thousands of user screenshots in huge resolution. I'm sure avatars would demand much less.

I mean, i have an option to upload dozens of ~300kb screenshots but not a 40kb avatar image, that's just frustrating.

I agree - it would be really nice if they changed this :)

I think its less abut there space.. and more abut slow internet users... if you have these all avatars may not even load to someone with slow internet
I know when i was on my 3G i was unable to load them... so i can understand that

Well, i always thought that as an online gaming platform Steam is not exactly meant to be used with a slow Internet connection. Especially in 2014.

But these are just forums. The games you can download and play when you are at your powerful computer with its 100Mb download... as long as i can read the forums on the move, that'd be nice.

Well some download there games and so on and play offline... there you do not really need a fast internet.. and even in 2014 there are many that cant connect as fast and all..

i can even say from my own experience from a servers that i cant remember its name that i try to use that did not work.. and the reason is they expected users to have a high bandwidth that i did not have. and i do not have that slow.. they just expected much faster...

Even more YouTube up to now had some real bad upload experience.. it was taking abut all night to upload 1 video... so its the same level..

Even here in 2014 not all users have that fast internet.. some even have it limited and i think for them every kb has a meaning for all there mouth internet

People who use Steam just to download games and play them offline because they don't have a good internet connection probably won't go browsing the steam community anyways. And if they do, they'll have to constantly download lots of much heavier stuff than a 40kb avatar. And when i say "40kb" i'm talking about a full-sized 184x184 profile picture. The ones you see in the forums are 32x32 and would have even less impact on the bandwidth. That, if Steam allows us to use PNG images instead of converting them to overcompressed JPGs.

well maybe i did not understand something?
And lets see how many profile photos you see in every place
  • Profile - 1 profile photo of the profile owner
  • Forums - many users of anyone talking on the forum + same on the chat

I can't see your point here. If you're using 3G for Steam forums, for any kind of forums actually, that's gonna be hard for sure even without avatars. That's why many sites just make simplistic mobile versions instead of adjusting the whole thing for 3G users.
