steam OS
with windows 7 support ending in 2020 i think it would be prudent for steam to consider making a full fledged OS designed for gaming and more (rather than just a TV OS). I'd pay a one time purchase fee for a steam based OS if it can run my office and adobe programs as well. i wish windows had a file validator system like the steam library game file validator. considering microsoft has forsaken the pc gaming community for moble support (ಠ_ಠ looking at you windows 8) i feel that steam may need to step in and lead the way into the future once again. friends believe me when i say that mircrosoft only makes a good gaming OS once every three or so systems and when they remove a feture they will never bring it back. windows 7 was the best gaming OS i have ever seen and until steam steps into the ring we will not see any better. steam you have bent over backwards to accomidate me even before i ask, i have faith you will exceed my expectations again and again in the coming decade.
P.S if you are wondering what features would impress everyone: support for programs native to windows, apple, linux and dos would be extrordinary. i sorely miss escape velocity and tie fighter. yes i did buy an archaic apple comp at a yard sale back in the day expressly for escape velocity and fish my parents old win 95 era computer out of a dumpster just to play tie fighter.

First not that easy... if you want it to support Windows games.. so i think the best you can do if you want a system that is not windows and may be close to what Valve will do for a OS is just get a Linux
As they cant just rebuild Windows or anything like that

believe me i know i spent two years trying to rewrite the .bin file to .exe program. (no luck) months of farting around with dosbox for tie fighter. (no luck but i still remember the days before dosbox when you had to write a kickstarter exe for doom, so i had half a chance.) as for linux my dad would disown me. well he wouldn't be able to provide support he worked for MS technet and he doesn't mess with linux. besides my plate is full i'd have to learn to program linux from scratch and i have to finish writing a 5 novel sci-fi action series. by the time i'm done with that steam will have a full OS in beta testing. if i haven't got my series to my publisher by 2020 i'll have far greater issues on my plate. and i was talking about windows natives like office 2013 pro and adobe cs6. if anybody can do it steam can and they can do it a thousand times better than me, i've been out of the tech loop for years and i've only just gotten back in. (rainmeter, making my own game mods and trying to program a Freeware AI to do research for me)

ok well first i like to point out SteamOS that there is now is based off linux... more or less its linux that any thing not needed for gaming was taken out and a BPM is build in it... and that is just abut it as what i understand...

They did not make a new OS from nothing... so if you really expect them to make one most case it will be based of Linux any way... so it will be abut the same

Running native Windows on linux is not easy on any way... just think abut Wine that is work on for years now and yet dose not work with every thing that is made for Windows
So to be honest i cant see Valve doing it..
i've seen the steam adverts for it and i don't believe it can support all my programs yet, i say give it time. there were nay sayers about steam working with sony and many people told me the postal series was never gonna be on steam but they provided the source code for postal 3 and the old games tagged along soon after. look linux has no major corporate support or workforce behind it. no support no go, no game on the new windows OS's no go. i'm putting my money on steam.

Postal 3 only appeared on Steam because it was published by a different company then the previous ones. The previous games had to go through Greenlight, whereas this one could just go straight into the store as it was a 'known publisher' - one who has a habit of releasing their items on Steam.

SteamOS won't support all your games and it never will unless Linux releases match Windows releases. It can only play Linux games, any others you'll need to stream from a Windows/Mac PC elsewhere in the house. It's staggering how well manufacturers have taken to producing "Steam boxes", but it's a LONG way off having all games appearing in shops with a "Windows\Linux" sticker across them.
What you want is for Steam to reinvent the wheel, not going to happen. Windows is pretty good for ensuring legacy software remains working, anyway.

Your dad isn't going to disown you for playing around for Linux.

Check out ReactOS

Don't bother with that, it's only going to be as good as Wine will ever be, since it depends on it.

You wont get all windows programs to run on Linux instead why not try to find Linux alternatives to programs you use and play the games you love that are on Linux and for the rest have windows 7.That's what I will be doing there's no way in hell I am getting Windows 8 if they are going the way of a closed system.

Windows 8/8.1 is not closed at all. I have not had one issue with anything that worked on Windows 7. To me Windows 8.1= Win7+Performance/speed improvements+ faster boot/shutdown+ Faster/longer support+ mobile/touch optimizations+ optional touch friendly modern/metro interface.
Windows 7 support is ending so soon?! D: I hope they give us the option of what version we want our Steam to be on, I'm not gonna be switching over to a new OS any time soon, since most likely, not all of my games will have the next supported Windows OS(I do not take Windows 8 seriously, its garbage for a desktop since it was originally designed for tablets).
I hope Windows 9 is actually good so i don't have to jump off a bridge.
You guys pretty much any Windows game will work on the next version. Any Windows 7 game atm will work on Windows 8.
I have both Win7 and Win8.1 systems, and they all play Steam Windows games just fine.

SteamOS is based on Linux, as others have already mentioned. If you want to go that route of running SteamOS, but want to be able to run Windows apps, there are 3 common options.

Option 1. Create and use a virtual machine, with a Windows intallation. Install your Windows applications into the Windows virtual machine. This requires a Windows license and virtual machine software such as VirtualBox or VMWare.

Option 2. Install emulator software such as Wine or CrossOver. No Windows license required, but some applications do not work in the emulator.

Option 3. Install a dual boot setup with SteamOS and Windows. Windows license is required, and you will need to boot into Windows to use your Windows applications.
so in other words: i can make the problem go away by not having the mentality of a stubborn old man. i still aint buying an HD touch screen. if im paying for that many pixels im not looking for an interface that requires me to smudge it up. so windows 8.1 is fine for gaming?
