Custom Status Options
Right now, we have six status options: online, offline, away, looking to play, looking to trade, and busy. This kind of ignores that there are other possibilities; the main issue I have is that I'll be playing a game from a different source (GoG, Origin, League, etc.) that isn't launched through Steam. I'd like to be able to tell my friends I'm 'in a non-steam game' or something without having to launch it through Steam. Any chance of adding a custom status option?

This would be an excellent idea, it would be great to let friends know what you are currently doing rather than just stating offline, online or busy.

I belive this already exist in an other form. You can add games as non-steam games to you're library. From that point on your friends will be able to see you playing that game.
You asked for a way to set such status without lanching the game through steam, however I think that steam wishes to encourage you to do it this way.

I know that Steam encourages it that way, but I hate it so much lol. I don't want to run media player through Steam when I'm watching a movie :P

Well you can do these maybe.. add something like notepad to Steam as a non-Steam game.. then you can just rename it inside Steam to what ever you like... from the properties and use that as a custom status.. not the best but it can work well

Yeah, that's what one of my friends does when he leaves his computer while it downloads games; it works, but it's so inelegant. I feel like it's something Steam should be able to support natively.

Custom statuses will never be implemented because scammers would immediately use them to scam with statuses like "Steam Admin".

I'd like to say that people aren't dumb enough to fall for that, but then I remember that they took away custom chat colors because people were getting scammed :(

Additionally to what Roo said, it was discussed to death already. One of the threads who pops up on the search shows another downside of customizing your status.

Eh, as pointed out in that thread, they already use the notepad trick to do that. I don't see why we shouldn't have a tool just because children are using it for attention.
