Average FPS
i think they should add the option to view the average FPS over the course of an adjustable amount of minutes so that i have a better idea of how it's running on average.

because you won't always be able to watch the little dips in the counter to judge for yourself. this will make it easier for poeple to lower the graphics if their trying to go for a more consistent framerate when using v-sync or in general those who just don't like it when their frames dip even slightly

i already know about the FPS counter, i'm suggesting this as an improvement. if you have to ask "if you don't even notice the drops, why worry about them?" then this thread isn't for you and you should let it be.

i understand that there are better already made and polished programs out there for this, but since steam is trying to do it anyway i made this thread because they might as well do it right

a chart that i can view might do a better job than seeing the average, make it viewable with steams alt + tab or something

" and for games that the FPS may vary, it's impossible to know if you got real improvements or not. In this case, an average value would be enough to answer this question." sums it up nicely

If you don't even notice the drops, why worry about them?

Under Steam's Settings -> In-Game you can activate an FPS counter, if you have a feeling that the game might lag, you can just glance in the top right corner and check yourself.

I wrote a small little program back when I was playing BF3 competitively, to log my fps and display it as a graph as well. It was useful to tune my settings. I also used it to find input lag (high settings increase input lag).

hmm actually a chart might be more useful than the average

i understand there are programs that already do what steam is trying to do but they do it better...however since steam IS trying to do it anyway, they might as well do it right and thats why i made this thread

Dude... if you need to watch the numbers to tell when you're losing fps... you really aren't being affected by it. Input or display stutter is usually very very noticeable even when slightly off.

Steam is already showing the fps. IT is always going to fluctuate, law of electronics and computing. Steam just shows it so people can bench mark their tweaks quickly. As for charting and graphing. Yeah that's not really what it was meant for or will ever be meant for I;'m afraid.

Better you grab a focused 3rd party app for that.

I believe the idea is quite valid - for instance, people might be interested to know if there's any gain on changing specific settings... and for games that the FPS may vary, it's impossible to know if you got real improvements or not. In this case, an average value would be enough to answer this question.
Quick example: there's a lot of discussions around Win10 having better FPS than Win8. An average number could put some evidences on this discussion.
