Provide option to disable Steam overlay in non-Steam games
The properties windows for non-Steam game / app entries added to a person's Steam games list doesn't supply the person with a tick-box to disable Steam overlay for that program.

Sometimes a program has issues with Steam overlay, and when a person from the friends list comes online, or an announcement shows up, or someone messages, it can cause issues with the program that's running.

A simple option to disable the Steam overlay in the properties box for individual non-Steam added entries in a Steam list, just like there is for native Steam programs, would solve this.

or a Luanch option opposite to -Steam ? Untill then...Global option:

Steam > Settings > In-Game

uncheck box "Enable Steam Overlay while in-game."

Works just fine for all games, and not that hard to enable or undo.

Well, doing that, which is a work-around, also isn't relevant to the suggestion that individual non-Steam apps be given a tick-box to disable Steam overlay for them, just as Steam apps all have an individual option in their properties to disable Steam overlay.

This is the suggestion forum, and this is my suggestion.

I too, would appreciate this feature.
Call me lazy, but I don't want to have to go toggle the global Steam Overlay option every time I switch between steam games and non-steam games.

Is there anything else we can do to draw more attention from the development team to this?
If they start working on the issue, how will they let us know?

Bump and /signed!

This feature is essential in my opinion. People have been asking for it for years now.
Here's one such thread: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/558751364325149930/

Do you have any valid reason that Valve shouldn't implement this? If not, don't comment.

Do you have any valid reason to add it to steam if you DON'T want the community interface? If you don't want feedback from other people, don't post in a public forum.

Here are some reasons listed in the linked-to thread from the Help and Tips forum:

Valve really needs to do that. Its nothing special. Just block for OverlayIU exe file. Its a shame that for so many years this haven't been done. I mean, hey! Some Steam Games have Valve side Overlay block because of crushes with it. Its obvious that games that wasn't designed for Steam can crush with overlay too. I installed few days ago Emperor: Battle for Dune. The game is prehistoric already. And it crushes with overlay. You will say - "Don't add it than". Yeah.... But Steam is my game library. I access each game from there. It helps me keep clean desktop and start menu without the need to make special folders for game shortcuts or navigating all the way to game directory for main exe file. Its not only overlay or my game activity notification. Its my personal easy-to-access game library manager.

I would also really appreciate this feature. I was baffled to find that I can't disable the Steam overlay. I'm launching the Unity editor from Steam in order to use the Steam Controller bindings, and I could really do without Steam alerts appearing inside my scene view.....

Massively needed, The overlay causes conflicts with the ENB I have in a game, and I can only disable it for -all- Not this -one- spesific non-steam launch version of the game >.<

I really want this, cause I use Steam as my game library and obviously not all games I have are on Steam.

Also, having non-Steam games launched through Steam informs the friends list of what's being played, which can be useful for getting people together to play games, or to let them know that a game or app is in progress and the person might not respond, and so on. It creates communication passively.

In fairness, the comment they were responding to was basically shutting down the suggestion and dismissing its point of discussion, and therefore working against discussing it - which the response given to not bother commenting if not contributing was defending the discussion of the idea.

The comment by fluxtorrent was made to pointing out that there is already an option to do so by not launching the game through Steam. Nothing was said to shut down the discussion, though the responding user made a statement to stop someone from disagreeing with the discussion to begin with.

In my opinion his comment was unconstructive and borderline trolling. His alternative, as already discussed, is not a desirable option. This thread and the one I linked to wouldn't exist if we were willing to simply not launch from steam.

Let it go man, arguing with a moderator is not going to go anywhere you want to end up.

He disagreed and stated a way to go about what was being asked. You didn't like the idea. I think you need to re-think what you consider trolling.

Seeing as this thread isn't being used for a discussion, but accusations, I'll just have to lock it up.
