Increase artwork size from 5mb to 10mb
For static artworks 5mb is fine, but for gifs it's just not enough.
A gif that's 800x600 has to be literally less than a second long (around 0.80 sec), at this point we may as well just upload a static picture. So if you want to use a gif you have to lower the framerate to something like 15 fps, and compress it 35% (already a 800x600 pic) for it to be under 5mb which just looks horrible, pixels everywhere and low framerate.

I already know there will be people coming out with the typical fake excuses like:
-"Valve reduced it from 8mb to 5 cause higher mb artworks takes longer to load."
If you look at speedtestnet's global index you will see that the average internet speed in 2024 is 56 mbps for download (way more than enough to load a steam profile seamlessly)
-"Storage costs money"
Valve make around $10b every year, they can easily afford it, money isn't the issue.

I have already provided you a source that explains the reason "why".
Now, whether it's the "only" reason, i will admit there can be a different reason ONLY if you can provide at least ONE other good reason, since you're so hard stuck on this specific word.
And now it's your turn to provide a source backing up your argument, i'd like your "other reason" to be backed up by a source.
Which of course, you wouldn't be able to do cause valve didn't disclose why they did it.

But yeah, basically:
There's two possible ways Valve deal with storage.
-They have their own storage
-They buy a service that gives them storage.

But looking at this:
Source: help.steampowered.com you can see that steam have their own storage the "Steam Cloud"
"The Steam Cloud allows games and the platform to utilize cloud storage hosted by Steam. Games can utilize Steam Cloud for storage of many different types of data, including game settings, save games, profile stats and other user-specific bits. Many Steam client settings are also saved via the cloud, including collections, friend nicknames and anything changed via the Steam client Settings menu. These settings will persist on an account regardless of which machine it is logged into, as the settings are pulled from the cloud upon login."

Basically they have their own data centers which of course you HDDs or SSDs.
And of course... how physics work xD:
When you run out of storage you need to buy more, so by lowering how much stuff users can upload the storage ends up getting filled up slower, which saves them money.

So yeah here is your proof that's literally backed up by Steam itself.

People always use "its not an affirmation forum" as an excuse to harass the OP or derail the thread. There is nothing wrong with posts that actually address the suggestion or offer constructive criticism but too many users here are too often in the habit of not even doing that.

Whatever their reason for shorting it to 5MB from 8MB, I doubt they raise it back up at all.

Could be bandwidth thing, could be cost effective, who knows what their reason for it.

What I can recommend is allow other formats like webm as good alternative to gif.

Now if this is a JPEG you need 10MB then yeah good luck with that.

The only reason is greed, they just wanna make more and more money cutting corners everywhere.
Yeah webm is a good idea.
I literally stated i'ts fine for static pictures and that it's an issue with gifs specifically but you probably just didn't read the topic.
As I said, this is the company that stores 300gb AAA games by the truckload. Storage is less likely to be the issue than web interfaces not being able to handle large pictures.

Of course without Valve comment we will not know the true answer.
