Steam should fire the moderation team and replace them with AI
At least the AI has a consistent ruleset

I feel like thats what they did. They used to have volunteer mods that seemed to at least somewhat care about what they are doing. Now we have an outsourced support that behaves similarly to AI.

Epic just had to lay off a good chunk of employees a few months ago. Doubt they can afford to hire.

And i suppose that's the difference. They at least have employees to lay off. Does Steam even have employees, or aside from outsourced moderation, is it all AI?

I think we all have to reject FUD, embrace these newer technologies. And as we had to accept Win7 going away, so may moderations jobs go away.

Lets get with the TIMES, Mr Newell :steamhappy:
it was more like a year ago, and it was not your typical run of the mill layoff. There was a growth increase during the pandemic, that sadly did not continue afterwards.

This is really no different than other companies that hire additional people during busy times, and then have layoffs when things cool down.

Nor is Epic the only one.
https://edition.cnn.com/2023/09/28/tech/epic-games-layoffs-fortnite/index.html

Epic’s layoffs are just the latest job cuts to hit the tech industry, which was forced to adjust after the stunning growth many companies saw during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic began to slow. Meta, Microsoft, T-Mobile, Lyft and others have all reduced their workforces earlier this year. More recently, Google parent Alphabet made its second round of layoffs of the year, eliminating several hundred recruiting jobs in September after having cut 12,000 employees in January.

About two-thirds of Epic’s Thursday layoffs will impact employees outside the company’s “core development” teams, Sweeney said. Some laid off workers announced on LinkedIn that they had been affected, including employees working in user experience for Fortnite, production, employee engagement and recruitment.

Laid off employees will receive a severance offer that includes six months of base pay, accelerated stock vesting and other benefits, according to Sweeney.

It is vastly different, what you are describing are seasonal workers and its known the work is temporary. Seasonal work is very common and its known its not going to last, and that is not what happened with EPIC when many were caught completely unaware. Fortunately Steam was under better management and didn't over hire or have redundant positions and was unaffected when so many others in the tech industry were.

Its a testament to Steam's leadership that unlike pretty much all their competitors like EPIC, GOG, Microsoft, etc that Steam has not had to do any mass layoffs in over a decade.

To the point, AI is now being considered.

It does not seem, anyone, from either party are happy with moderation atp.

Those who think others get away with matters they may not. Those who feel it too lenient, too harsh, etc. Alt tags, and accusations of circumvention. Too political, too anything atp.

Even those accused of being "moderators", and trying to dictate the rules to us, themselves getting the hammer.

Be it AI, or training and reeducation, or sacking them altogether, we need to all work together, to continue to put pressure on these matters.

And i'm glad to see, what was just a few of us just a couple of years ago, are now hundreds even thousands of these posts.

I was literally banned once just for telling someone to shut up after they talked ♥♥♥♥ about me being bad at a game. https://viper.shadowflareindustries.com/images/bans/SteamBan10182024.png

Moderation needs to stay the ♥♥♥♥ out of things instead of acting like elementary school teachers. Forums have block/ignore buttons for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason.

I've been building a collection of ridiculous moderations from Steam and elsewhere for years. The official Gears of War forum when it existed, actually banned me for "aggressively posting in a negative manner." I mean WTF.

Or perhaps you should block and ignore users if you can't respond without attacks. Forums do have the block/ignore button, so if you feel the need to insult someone you should just block them instead.

You realize anyone that looks at those images are going to see one person moderated on multiple sites for the same identical reasons right?

If anything, this is showing that multiple sites see one person as the issue.

Yep, it proves moderation on Steam is consistent and accurately applied in those cases and that not only do multiple moderators agree, moderators on multiple sites from multiple companies agree
