yet another remove vanity urls from dead accounts post
title says all

dead accounts should get their VANITY url removed after few years (vanity url does not affect them if they ever come back to their dead accounts)

this one account with url i wanted is dead for 15 years (the account is 20 years old, dont talk about "your acc is 18 years old you could have gotten it)

"how do u know their account isnt active"
they use the same name and profile picture since 2014 according to wayback machine and a wayback archive from 2017 still said the last game they played was counter-strike in 2009
they also only own 10 games all these years

edit: ppl defending dead accounts keeping vanity urls are funny and somehow are always people who dont have vanity urls

dont speak if u dont have vanity url, ur opinion really has no value about something that doesnt concern u

edit 2: valve already considered this feature https://archive.is/jd5mO
they just havent implemented it yet (and they should)

this isnt Origin where you must name yourself XXX_EpicGnome_XXX
a person who would come back after 10 years would definitely not care if they lost their vanity url if they can use their account (other companies would nuke your entire account for inactivity)

edit 3: i forgot steam discussions are on par with reddit, unsubbing

Once upon a time, many years ago they entertained the idea of having long inactive accounts vanity URLs removed, but they never went forward with the idea.

People having the same profile pic and name isn't odd at all. The only variant I have of my profile pic is one with a Santa hat for Christmas.

A "dead" account doesn't mean it will never get used anymore. I can certainly understand people coming back to their account after years, find the custom url gone because of some numbnu and be pissed about it.

No matter the irrelevant fluff people bring up, such things are "first come, first serve" and it should remain like that in my opinion.

You wanting it is zero teason to remove it from the original creator.

Your account is 18 years so you had the chance to be the original creator prior to them.

not "dead", its deadass dead, i doubt theyll rememeber they had an account if theyre still alive

i dont think a person not using their account for 15 years will ever come back, not to mention they probably would not even care about losing a vanity url, since majority of 3 letter urls were taken by people that wanted to profit off selling the 3 letter urls

their account is 20 years old and most likely taken the url to resell it when vanity urls were added (huge percent of 3 letter urls are people who wanted to resell the urls)

Which isn't relevant.

It doesn't matter what you think, though. Or what you assume for that matter.

You want something that isn't yours. Trying to get someone to force steal it for you doesn't change that.
I get that it sucks if you want the url, but as is more often in life, sometimes you simply have to be there at the right time. And saying "I don't like it, I want it" isn't as compelling as you think it is.

Exactly - their account, their vanity url.

What the hell is even "vanity URL" and why would it be worth something? Sounds like "mountain out of molehill" scenario.

I have a vanity URL so by that logic my opinion matters.

You missed your chance. Doesn't matter if the account isn't currently in use. The fact remains that it can still be. You can't predict whether or not that account owner is going to start using it again, nor can Steam Support.

Imagine that you had to take a break from gaming for a bit just to return and find your whole identity was revoked because your account went dormant temporarily. You would be fine with that?

Agree with those saying no. They picked it, and even if the account is dead you don't have any right or expectation to take it. Just make a new one and use some creativity.
sfnhltb 10. juli 2024 kl. 5:29
Make them cost $10 a year to retain, that will free up the "dead" ones that aren't used any more. Or maybe even a bidding process so the more popular ones the rent gets more expensive the more that want it.
Lily McFluffy Butt 10. juli 2024 kl. 5:42
Just because you want it, doesn't mean you're entitled to it. People shouldn't lose their vanity URLs just because they had to go dormant for a bit.

I’ve had a very similar discussion with children when I used to work in a nursery.

You don't have a vanity URL, so by OP's logic your opinion shouldn't count.

Frankly I still have NO IDEA what this damn "vanity URL" is.
Just the word "vanity" tells me it's redundant though.
"Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas."
