Addons like Ad Blocker for Overlay websearch

The overlay websearch is almost unusable because the sites with walkthroughs have dozens of ads surrounding the text.

Anyone else wish the overlay browser was a little more robust?

Never use the overlay to surf the net outside of Steam, its no where near safe to do that. Use a real browser for that where you can more easily lock it down and add in script blockers and ad blockers and what not that will get updated far more often.

Valve is not a browser company and it shows. The web ♥♥♥♥ in their own interface performs embarrassingly awful but I guess all the people who took pride in their development skill left with the guy who was the only one who understood the database enough to provide changeable usernames. (Could also be Chromes fault as Google is on an even worse trajectory development wise. But every 20 seconds I have to wait for the screenshot browser to initialize reduces my charity to Valve)

On every level, it is mistake using their awful in built chrome trash. It was a mistake for them to make it and a mistake for you to ever use it. Browsers are basically mini OSes now and you need a dedicated developer to deliver a half useful browser. Put your games in borderless fullscreen and use your proper browser if you can.

With any suggestion, I am only hoping the browser gets more robuts.

Steam isn't a browser company but stuffing it with chromium and making it a proper browser would be nice.

Use your regular web browser, the overlay browser has some utility, but any time your needs exceed the overlay browsers capabilities the solution always will be to alt-tab and use your desktop browser.

People really shouldn't use the Overlay browser outside of Steam's own Websites (like Steamcommunity, steam support, and steam store) it's dangerously insecure. Obviously on Steam Deck or DIY steam machines it's more convenient to access the overlay browser, it's not a good idea though.

It would be great if Valve made an effort to try and make their browser a bit better but I'm doubtful that's going to happen. Best to just use a different browser like Firefox or Chromium instead as those both allow you to use uBlock origin and other enhancing plugins.

Note: Would not advise chromium for ad blocking due to manifest v3 changes.

The only reason there's an overlay browser is because they're using CEF, they're not going to cram a different browser in there to satisfy the requirements of some minority that thinks the overlay browser should be on par with their primary desktop browser.

If you have concerns about it as is, don't use it. Other people have to take care of themselves.

I don't think that's an excuse for it being as insecure as it is. Even if they're not going to make it a feature rich browser at least make it reasonably secure. After all it is also the primary interface of the Steam Store page,

i have multiple monitors (edit:and pc's), so it is not a big deal to me

but before i did it sucked to alt tab out to find something

it would be great if they secured what they have so people could use it

never did myself,

but if it is chromium,

it should not be that hard to shore up its weak points

I'm sure they're not if people don't want it.
It requires suggestions, then followings, and then further discussion till we really KNOW what they're going to do.

If no one says anything? Yes, you're right, we agree it isn't a priority for them.

But if you close down every suggestion with 'they will never' because a small minority cried, well the hope of this suggestion is to not remain a small minority.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don't squeak and they wont give any grease.

But yes, I agree they aren't going to do this with chromium but Steam let eroge on with enough push back.

You're right the current implementation sucks. To me the fix is it should just pull up links in your properly tuned browser and stop trying to balloon Steam's functionality into stuff it really need not do, but a better implementation within Steam is definitely a solution that would fix the problem.

Hopefully Valve improves it either way.

I am also open to removing it

The bloat we've gotten may not be related to this but its pretty bad either way and until I know better I'll assume the half baked streaming and VOIP features are the bigger issue.
