There should be a way to start a game directly from your library screen without clicking through to the library page of the game
Literally would save me a click and make my mouse twice as long in the long run.

It could be because they don't want an avalanche of people screaming in the forums that they keep accidentally launching games when they don't want to by single clicking on something.

Seriously its just 2 clicks, nothing will be lost by spending another 10th of a second on a second click...

Optionally and off by default, sure. I really would not want a game to just start by accidentally clicking on it.

Fixes half you problem of "without clicking through to the library page of the game" or did you forget that part?
You can place a game shortcut on your desktop and open the game from there. Without go to Steam library. I do that all the time.

How short are your play sessions that clicking one extra time every time you want to start a game that isn't the last game you played is significant? You click hundreds or thousands of times once the game has started. Your mouse isn't going to disintegrate just because the Steam library's home page isn't full of spring-loaded traps that launch executables at the slightest touch.
