AVIF support for screenshots in HDR (And probably SDR too)
Steam notoriously sucks for taking screenshots in HDR which is maybe part of why some people don't use it. Xbox game bar uses JXR, which is nice but not supported anywhere outside of photo viewer. Also JXR files are large.

AVIF is tiny, a 8MB JXR is only 200kb in avif, which includes HDR color. It would probably be great for SDR screenshots too.

Also avif works in browsers for HDR color, an example site below. (Only doesn't work in edge currently)

Steam could be one of the first places to share HDR game screenshots. And I can stop having to resort to game bar to do so.

avif also does not work in firefox. In fact HDR doesn't work in firefox full stop.
I will add my support for the concept of simply having decent images that aren't washed out though.

Firefox supports it apparently but the support may not be as comprehensive. May have to enable a flag.

Edge will supposedly get it in version 112

Man they been sitting on their hands about this for 4 years?

Isn't it a similar thing for video? HDR doesn't work in firefox for youtube either.

I thought that was just laziness on youtubes part or something, I didn't realize firefox just didn't bother all this time.

Well still at least the images work. Do they look tone mapped at least?

No, they look really dark. And as you said, in Edge they don't work. I don't have Chrome because I don't trust Google too much.

Yeah, if I ever want to watch a youtube HDR, I have to open Edge :(

I don't have chrome either but it does work in Brave browser and other chromium based stuff.

Hopefully edge 112 comes soon, and Firefox needs to get its ♥♥♥♥ together too...

Does the Chromium version Steam is stuck on support HDR? If not, I presume that this idea would have to wait for at least about a year until they upgrade the version (and sadly, cut off Windows 7 support...)

I don't use HDR, but upgrades of this sort would be welcome. Steam is still stuck on the exact same system as it has been since screenshots were added to the client after all; the only direct upgrade was the higher cloud limit.

I'll try the above website tonight and see, cause I know the overlay it self doesn't really have proper HDR display. But maybe the browser does cause chromium has had it for a while...

I just had the heart break of the year, xbox game bar wasn't active and now all my screenshots from like the last 30 hours are wasted :(

Jedi survivor may perform like ♥♥♥♥ but its easily one of the best HDR games in a while.

A whole revamp of steam and screenshots still don't work for HDR >:/

I would take JPEGXL too, just anything seriously.

Has anyone tested the new setting "Save Uncompressed HDR screenshots as AVIF" Slider under Steam>Settings> In Game> Screenshots?

Unfortunately function isn't working for me, and still saving uncompressed screens washed out as PNG. Unless Steam is saving into a different location then my selected folder for Separate Uncompressed Screens, that went undetected in my complete system search...IDK..

Also I've searched online for more specific info about this New Setting with no direct hits...

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
