It is still there for me, between Big Picture Mode and Friends (not named "Friends & Chat" in mine), and I'm able to play purchased soundtracks too.
I also have "Soundtracks" above "Downloads". Also "Settings" at the end of the list, which you don't seem to have, and the "Game Servers" are named just "Servers".
We already have a profile summary where we can write such messages or even in a Custom Info Box showcase, so what's the difference apart of the location of the message?
These are our Steam friends, they can't add themselves in our list, they have to be accepted by us, and if we don't like them we can remove them. It's even worse if they spam us in the chat, but still they are allowed to do it now if they want - because they are in our list.
Because these you want are displayed to friends and other users outside of their profiles.
The text on their profiles are only on their profiles, which someone would have to go looking for to find.
Just to friends, not any other users. I'm talking about the "FRIENDS & CHAT" at the bottom right of your Steam desktop client, where you can see and organize lists of your friends and chat with them.
Exactly, which has very low visibility, because you'll rarely visit their profiles. Having your message displayed in the Messenger (i.e. "Friends & Chat") box is by far more gamey and social.
Now replace the part where you said that "which someone would have to go looking for to find" with "which someone would have to either go looking for adding that person to their friends list or accept that person's invite". I don't see a problem where there's none.
Hover over a users avatar any place it is visible, on the forums, right click in game, user reviews, screenshots, artwork...
Statuses appear there as well. No need to be friends. No searching to look at profiles specifically.
Public users. Friends only and private are a different thing.
But this would still be a huge issue considering how many accounts are hijacked daily and the hijackers would love to use this as another means to spam their phishing links, for friends and non-friends.
This little feature that I am suggesting (which is well-known to anyone who once had an MSN Messenger), obviously does not exist at the time of writing, so none of the locations that you worry about are real concerns. All I've suggested, was about the Friends List and only, and in my opening example it's simply an addition to the status. No need to be implemented and appear anywhere else, and no need to debate about anything that I didn't really suggest.
The highjacker can tamper with the entire account and public profile and even send you spam in the chat. How would a custom message that you can't even click on, be of any extra danger? If anything, a crypto scam message would be a clear indication that your friend's account has been compromised, so you can block them before they even message you.
