Add an option to mask the red banner alert of old OS support end
Hello. Everything is in the title. It would be nice to have please, somewhere in the parameters menu, an option to mask that red banner at the top of my steam client window that remind me I have XXX days left before not being to play anymore.

I'm already saving for new rig as best as I can, and it's already stressful enough without having a massive red band under my eyes that constentely remind it to me.

Or maybe that option exist and I didn't see it?

Thanks.

Edit: On page 2, thanks to Start_Running (+ me who looked deeper), a solution has been found to mask for good the red banner ^^

That's actually a good news, but how to create a skin? Or better, is a way to copy the default one/rename it to modfiy that file? Or even better, where is this "SteamRootDialog.layout" located, as maybe there's a way to mod it ^^
Edit: I've found the find location. I'm gonna try to copy it , and modfiy original one.

- Go to your STeam Folder

- Select the 'resources' and 'graphics' folders.

- Hit CTRL+C.

- Open the folder Steam/skins

- Create a new Folder. The Name of the FOlder will be the name of the SKin. FOr this example, lets use 'NoAlert"

- Open the new NoAlert folder.

- Hit CTRL+V to paste the previously copied folders into the NoAlert folder

- Now Modify the file I mentioned in the previous post.

COngrats you now have a custom skin.

YOu activate it by going to Steam > Settings > Interface. and selecting the skin from the drop down menu. Then you restart STeam.

You can either clone your HDD or just put it in the new PC and the settings should transfer over.

You've made my day. I add my 2 cents, as even with your modifications, a small part or the red banner exist.

On the 4 "support_alert" paragraphs also put "font-weight" to 1, and all "x.y" value in "render_bg" to 0, to the 4 main paragraphs.

Lastly, at the very bottom, paragraph "colors" change the 3 hexadecimal colors values "support_flat_red", "support_hover_red 1 and 2" to "145 22 30 44".
Like that, the last bit of red banner is gone, and no more stress :D

Thanks a bunch again Start_Running ^^

Just commenting out the 0=line in back ground render works as well./ Just tack "//" to the front of it. Have fun and glad I could help.

That's obnoxious.

It probably is set to go away after X time knowing Valve.

Do you try to run the Steam program on Windows 7?
Then you should this message in red at top from a last days update.

Thanks for the skins tutorial, most helpful thing to avoid the annoying alert!

Be aware. In the beta, there are no skins as of the beta update today.

I may make a complete guide for this (right now it only addresses what has to be done if webkit.css has been used before, there's no info about what to enter in it), but here's a method of making overrides, under "Make webkit.css work again":

Yeah same, though during these "harsh" times it can be essantial ^^ hf

the last part for me was to offset the 'margin-top=9' in 'place', in the 'layout' section at the bottom of the script: (to get rid of the url-redirect)

layout { ...
place [!$OSX] { control="universe_label, EOLAlert, SupportAlert" spacing=8 align=right end-right="ParentalLockButton" margin-top=-100 margin-right=8 height=24 }
... }

edit: oh, apparently that's the only thing i had to do..
- duplicating this part to single out 'EOLAlert' is also an option

*eola.. is the one that triggers the banner for me
https://www.parkplacetechnologies.com/blog/eol-vs-eosl-vs-..
https://serviceexpress.com/resources/eol-eosl-tip-sheet/

[but, uh.. back to my win11 asus rog machine!]
. . .

v You can also copypaste this line 10 times around this forum (i've heard that steam will redact the eol alert if this number is exceeded)

Just edit the following file with a text editor:

\Program Files (x86)\Steam\resource\layout\steamrootdialog.layout

And disable the following lines by adding \\ (comment)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Line 56
//EOLAlert
//{
// ControlName=Button
// labelText="#Steam_EOLAlert"
// style="support_alert"
// textAlignment=center
// command="OpenEOLAlertWindow"
//}

Line 806
// place [$OSX] { control="universe_label, EOLAlert, SupportAlert" spacing=8 start="frame_maximize" align=left margin-top=-4 margin-left=13 height=24 }

Line 817
// place [!$OSX] { control="universe_label, EOLAlert, SupportAlert" spacing=8 align=right end-right="ParentalLockButton" margin-top=9 margin-right=8 height=24 }

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't forget to disable the client updates to prevent changes:

- Create the file steam.cfg in your Steam root installation folder (\Program Files (x86)\Steam) and add the following entry:

BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just for fun:
You can have some fun and edit the EOL message. It's on the file:

\Program Files (x86)\Steam\public\steamui_english.txt (For English UI)

Line 4080
"Steam_EOLAlert" "Steam will stop running on %OsVer% in %DaysUntilOSEndOfLife% days."

I hope Steam doen't get angry with me :) Please don't ban me OK. Let's wait for the EOL :) Just kidding :)

Two things to note:
  • It is more practical to create a new skin rather than to edit the file directly
  • The Desktop UI (browser'd UI from beta, it can be disabled with -vgui) has no skin support at all, custom CSS would have to be used instead; I haven't found the element name to hide yet though
