Disable system updates on Steam Deck
over the last 6 months of using the steam deck, its been great. I have complete comtrol over my system, everything is set up the way I want it... and then steam forces another bug filled update because the gyro was flipped the wrong way round or joy con button support has been added while in desktop mode the keyboard stops working or plugins I'm using are completely disabled - plugins with features that fix the terrible colour saturation of the screen or allow me to or lock the gpu clock but allow it to go higher when needed.

It reminds of before I hadnt figured out how to rid my PC of the windows update virus and had to reinstall new graphics drivers because windows update had installed its own version, which obviously worked so well the computer didnt recognize my graphics card.

same with game updates, put in an option to reject game updates and system updates.

- ask the user if they would like to update. finding out that my steam deck has updated when I turn it on is definitely not how it should be done. especially considering how badly shader cache files are handled currently.
-add a disable updates completely option in games, update with high priority, update when game starts and update now is not what I would call 'options'
- separate graphics driver updates from the Steam OS updates so the user can still upgrade the drivers without a near inevitable bug filled system update being included.
- prioritize updates as optional, bug fix or essential (allowing for rejection of all of them) for example, update mesa drivers would be considered an essential update for performance whereas I've never used gyro or joy cons and would be rejected
- archive steam OS versions and allow the user to choose what version to update with ratings next to them.
- for each stable version of the OS have an option to give it a rating in categories like, useability, performance, number of bugs, compatibility etc

There's only been 2 occasions when a steam update hasnt introduced a million bugs into the system and its my biggest issue with the handheld... in fact its always been the issue with handhelds, steam isnt as bad as sony but the updates are getting to the point even on stable that I waste so much time redownloading shaders, resetting up my steam deck every time it updates and its becoming unuseable for me and to avoid the hassle i'll happily drop the deck to avoid so much time resetting it every update

in conclusion, my suggestion is to remove windows update from steam, its more of a virus at this point for me. currently I cant even be bothered setting everything up again, going back to my pc for a bit because until steam sort this dog's dinner out, my steam deck will be sitting idle and if its still not sorted, its getting put up for sale

The main frustraton seem to be system updates and how they're communicated to the user, though.

As said in my post in the thread you linked, it's possible to bypass game updates:

The system updates are the bigger issue by far, capcom breaking resident evil 3, dying light recently broke itself but thats not as big as useability of the deck itself.

is there anything to stop deck updates? they are genuinely incompetent at this point. To show how consistent the updates are my latest for the first time in 6 months decided to update through desktop mode... never done it before, was on game mode for a good 20 mionutes with no update, switched to desktop mode and it came up with updating steam when it was actually a system update.

the decks a total mess, why do the creators of any handheld ever released always do such a bad job at handling them?

if i cant disable system updates its a no go

I also need this. It may be a shell script which triggers the update. I haven't been able to find which one.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
