“Like or Dislike” Feature on Comments/Threads
I think this would be a nice, simple, addition. Currently we do have the award system for comments, which is fine, but sometimes you might want to just like a comment, and not award it for whatever reason.

Maybe you thought what they said was cool, but not so amazing to award it? Or perhaps you didn’t like it and you want to express that without potentially triggering them and starting an argument.

Basically just make it similar to how reviews work. I can see how this may potentially take away from the award system; but personally, I “like” reviews that are helpful and I award ones that I find entertaining, or awesome to me. It doesn’t seem like there’s much of a conflict between the two.

What do you all think?

Edit: Originally had said “vote up a comment,” replaced that with “like.” Not suggesting a voting system for comments.

Edit #2: Calling it a “freebie award” might sound better.

NO. This is a one way ticket to creating echo chambers. Look at Reddit: you either speak with everyone or getting downvoted to oblivion.

I get that. To be honest, I’m not sure how Reddit works with that.

What I’m suggesting is something that isn’t going to remove or silence someone. So, like with awards, it doesn’t count towards the replies to a topic, and after you award someone it doesn’t bump the thread. This would be similar, your comment would still be there even if it had a bunch of dislikes.
No thanks, it was already done with the other forum and was garbage and is easily abused.

I don’t understand. I’m suggesting the same system that’s used for reviews. Is that abused? Do people make fake accounts and like/dislike their own reviews? I guess that’s possible, and probably does happen.

I’m not suggesting an upvote or downvote system. It’s not going to push your comment up or down, or be the “most liked comment.” It’s not a rating.

I returned to Steam a couple years ago after being gone for about seven years. Not sure what you’re referring to with “other forum.” Was it already done in an older version of Steam?

Something akin to Blizzard’s forum, specifically World of Warcraft, where literally it’s just a little heart next to the comment. Once someone clicks the heart, a little number appears next to it.

That’s a like. Simple.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a simple "like" feature, but I don't see Valve offering a "dislike" option, as part of their effort to keep forums civil and welcoming involves not giving us tools to interact in an inherently negative way (well, in theory, at least, since the Jester award kind of became just that).

The old forums, Steam Powered User Forums (SPUF) was separate from Steam itself.

These forums came about in late 2012. The old forums were shut down in 2017.

The title of the thread might be misleading, I’m not advocating specifically for one or the other.

That makes sense to encourage positive interactions. Unfortunately, I think some people are afraid to engage on forums because of toxicity. I was one of those people for a long time and took pleasure when I could express myself anonymously by liking a comment that I could relate with.

No. It's bad for discussions. Forums are meant for discussions not fishing for "upvotes" by posting whatever is popular/trending.

Oh okay. Thank you for providing that. If we had a “like” feature I’d just give you a  ;)

That's what awards are for.

But don't waste them on me.

This just seems like one more step toward "Facebook Syndrome" to me. Basically, you get people into this mindset where they will only post to get Likes and they will become addicted to it. Steam forums can be quite toxic sometimes, sure, but I always still valued these forums for making users pay attention to the actual content of the posts and then thinking critically about how to respond. Under a "Facebook Syndrome" governed online space, all you get on most posts are cheesy "Sounds good!" or "I second that!" type posts. I don't want that. I want posts that show the responder has actually thought about what was said and reacted accordingly, adding something new, even if they disagree. It makes people use their brains rather than sating their desire for approval.

Just my two cents on the matter, anyway.

No thanks, we don't need to give scammers yet another way to scam people.

"Look at the likes on my post, its super high, you send the money via paypal first then I will send you the item!"

And then we got even more people screaming on the forums about how they were scammed and Valve should do something. And of course the other ones that will claim Valve is in on the scamming and getting a cut (some have already said that).

And yes people will fall for that... how do we know? Because people fall for dumb scams all the time and they were falling for it on the old forums, which is one of the reasons they didn't include a like/dislike on posts.

The awards were also a dumb move for Valve to do but if you feel the need to "like" something.... give them an award.... and no I don't want one. I wish Valve would get rid of them, they have been nothing but a problem since they were introduced.
