Is it a bad idea to trade games?
For example i would want to trade cyberpunk for an assassin creed game as reference. Is there cons and pros to this. Is it not a thing in steam because its not ethical

It's not a thing because game publishers would never agree to it. Publishers sell a license to play the game and that license is non transferable.

the downside of no physical media i guess. i have this issue myself, many years ago, on the xbox 360 i had two accounts i paid for both because i needed it for netflix on two xboxes that might run at the same time, then i ended up with my real "professional" appearing email address as i got older and have a 3rd non paid xbox account. games are spread out through accounts due to my own idiocy and microsoft poilcy / multiplayer

what i really want to do is trade all my games to myself, the old accounts only remain due to games paid for with them, i would like it all from both moved to my newer account that is the master account for all my windows devices now and pay for just one gold membership (games for gold were claimed on one account some on others)

xbox primary console alleviates some of this mess but i still have to pay for both accounts to keep the games i claimed from gold. guess its not a real big deal, but it would be nice to merge everything but i even contacted microsoft and they said it was impossible

Hoping in the future there would be a feature to trade, and if not trading games, similar to it. For now the only similar thing i can think of is the steam family sharing feature. :)

You mean the industry that cries for 40 years that piracy and the second hand market is going to destroy them and now has brought forward multi-billion dollar companies?

the scammers and account thieves would also love this idea, gives them more they can steal and launder.

it is also not in steams interest nor the game developers interest to allow such a thing as game trading. you can hope all you want, its not happening.

if you want to see it happen, you need to talk to your lawmakers and have them force it. you may get what you asked for, but it is not going to be what you wanted.

You can trade game keys for other game keys.

inb4 somebody mentions a ludicrous idea like "Gamekeys As NFT".

That can only be done if the key has not been redeemed.
Also games bought on Steam do not give you a key to enter, as the game is added directly to your account.
The only way to get CDkeys would be on 3rd party sites and there are plenty that will scam you with an already redeemed key or an illegally obtained one.

The main problem with digital license trading is its an almost zero friction action.

If you look at physical game trading you start seeing all the little things that add friction and make it a hassle and add incoveniences to the act itself.

Digital trading erases almost every factor of friction. Exchanging a digital game is a worldwide instant action. Add to it the sheer volume of available 'stock' of exchangeable games there would suddenly be. It's kind of an 'industry breaking' change of paradigm. Devs competing against millions of users constantly trading the games they expect to sell for cheaper.

Then there's the industry reaction to such a paradigm change. If you think the game industry would not react to such a change is naive. We could face a future where games are only available through subscription services, never to be properly sold. Or games jumping into a SaaS model.

They've also seen the second hand market becoming a multi million business built on top of depredating their game sales.

There's nothing unethical about it, but a secondary market stands to hurt the publishers who want to maximize profits, so they (and Steam) have no financial incentive to support that.

You can buy used games if they're on console or CDs but not digitally.

Lol...console game sales income is higher than PC, and consoles have a 2nd hand market, and allow you to lend/borrow games.

There used to be a 2nd hand PC game market, when the industry was much, much smaller than it is now, yet it survived.
FFS, both the movie and music industry have survived despite having none of the DRM protection of video games.

The 2nd hand console market is on its way out as well, sadly. this console generation still has both disc and digital only versions of the consoles, you can bet that in the future it will be digital only.

Actually it is doing quite well, and shows no signs of abating, Sony has repeatedly stated that their policy of physical media and lending/borrowing will not change...it's one of their main selling points
