Get Facebook out of my Steam payments!!!
I'm not at all amused by having to offer my information up to The Empire of Zuck, in order to pay Steam via Paypal... Please remove the "accept-or-fail" requirement to use Facebook Messenger (and allow FB to collect information on that transaction) as part of a Paypal payment, at my soonest possible convenience!!

P.S. did the FB rep who wrangled this deal give good kickbacks, great BJs, or both?
Enquiring minds want to know (not really).

Anyone reading this, who doesn't think that Steam handcuffing us into submitting to data surrender in order to use a preferred payment type, please feel free to add your voice to this thread. Maybe (not much hope though) if enough of us call BS, they'll remove this stupidity from the payment process....

Not sure how you require FB in your Paypal transaction but I just bought a game using my Paypal account, first time ever on Steam, and never encountered any FB interaction. Sounds like something on your end.

This is on PayPal's end, not Valve's.

https://www.paypal.com/sm/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-unlink-paypal-from-facebook-faq3406

Seems like someone linked their account to Messenger for PayPal payments.

https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/how-do-i-update-my-facebook-messenger-notification-preference-help190

Valve even removed the highly suspicious "link your account to Facebook for an additional 50 friends slots" back in early 2020.

Definitely a user error or issue, never had to do Facebook stuff using PayPal.

I don't link my PayPal and Facebook, and I can pay for things just fine.

I use paypal, I don't have it connected to facebook. This is not a Steam thing, its a Paypal thing. If you can unconnect it from paypal, do so but to do it, you will have to log into paypal and disconnect it there.

How is it that all these links are dead already? Great some of you don't use it and "believe" it is a user problem. Step aside and let actual solutions come forth from those who actually know how to solve / block this from happening.

The links aren't dead. I just went to them.

They outline how to solve needing to sign into FB if you want to use the PayPal option on Steam. Once you select PayPal as the payment option, the extra information is from PayPal, not Steam.

Once you unlink your FB from your PayPal, it should not require you to log into FB to submit payment through PayPal with Steam.

Here are the steps I tried:I was able to do it on my pc. It shows the unlink as pending now. Not sure how long it will take to remove it.

Finding your automatic payments on the website:

Go to Account Settings.
Click Money, Banks and Cards.
Click Set Automatic Payments.
Select the merchant.

On this page, you can Cancel the automatic payment and Change the backup payment method.

To change the payment method:

Select your current payment method.
Select a new payment method or click link a new card or bank.
Click Save.

Contact information for your merchant can be found in the automatic payment.

I've never used FB and the PayPal method forces me to integrate it with messenger. It makes no sense

THat is weird, because as pointed out, it does not do that.

This is on both PayPal and Steam. Linking to Facebook Messenger seems to be something that PayPal offers, and Steam recognizes it as a form of payment.

In order to bypass it, simply select "PayPal" and NOT "My PayPal Account" in the payment drop down menu on Steam.

"PayPal" will allow you to pay for it normally, while "My PayPal Account" will force you to link it to Facebook Messenger.

I am yet to find out what paying with "My PayPal Account" implies, but if it leaves a stain on the account, I suspect this is how it can be undone:

I don't have a Facebook account but recall seeing some Messenger notice when I bought something on Steam via PayPal. As before, I presume that nothing actually happens, but that it's an advertisment... But I don't know.

As of 21:53 CDT on 4/8/2023, both "My Paypal Account" and "Paypal" payment methods take me to the form that only provides the Paypal using Facebook Messenger option. This wasn't the case about 2 weeks ago when I made a gift purchase via the Steam app, so why is it happening now?

I will not use Facebook Messenger. I have already had to deal with identity theft due to Facebook's lax security, and will not expose my financial information to that company.

I will be contacting Paypal when they have humans to answer my complaint, but for now, I will not make purchases.

Update: 11:18 AM, 4/9/2023
Paypal seems to think it's either Steam or Facebook's responsibility to provide an opt-out for connecting my Paypal account with Facebook Messenger. I don't think this is actually the case, but I'm keeping a log of the conversation.

Update: 11:57 AM, 4/9/2023
I sent an email message to "support@steampowered.com", attaching screenshots of the PayPal dialog and the transcript of the fruitless chat with PayPal support. I pointed out that this is likely illegal in some jurisdictions. I have never contacted Valve/Steam support before, so I have no idea if they make any effort to address such issues, however I will not be making any purchases on the Steam Store until this is resolved and there is nothing forcing Facebook Messenger on me.

Update: 12:03 PM, 4/9/2023 (CST)
I got an auto-response from Valve saying that "support@steampowered.com" is no longer monitored, and that I should submit a help ticket on "https://help.steampowered.com", where I was previously unable to find a way to submit such a help ticket. Very very unhelpful.

Could it be Meta? I do have a meta account, but it has a different mail address. I just had that messenger bs come up during a paypal transaction which I then cancelled.

If you attempt to make a purchase and Paypal/My Paypal Account only allows that if you allow access to Meta/Facebook (like it's doing to me), and you cancel the purchase, then help.steampowered.com is easier to get to actually make a ticket.

Under 'What do you need help with?' I clicked 'Purchases,' then 'I can't complete my purchase', then clicked on the game I attempted to buy & canceled buying, and then I chose, 'I have a question about this purchase.'

I'm not sure if that last choice is the best one, but it did allow me to make a ticket.

Editing to note for others: I definitely did not previously link a Facebook/Meta account to Paypal, to cause this. I don't *have* a Facebook/Meta account to link. This is probably a change in how Steam is doing this, and they're probably rolling it out to users slowly. Sometimes corps test things in batches. I just hope it doesn't become permanent.
---
1 more edit: I was finally able to make it work by choosing Paypal (not My Paypal Account) which previously didn't work-- this time it worked when I unchecked to remember my information. Hopefully it works for others!
