I got an idea- Lets have steam (that has to be running in the background of MOST steam supported online MMO's) Take client side in game screenshots, and then download them to a steam community wide overwatch for all steam games. Through workshop and other community perticipation and steam level will grant you overwatch access to help steam catch these cheaters.

Screenshots are large, you would need a lot of them to be able to actually tell if someone was cheating. Thats gonna suck up a LOT of bandwidth that some people have to pay through the nose for the small amount they have. Then you also have the fact that uploading while playing will cause issues with your ping, specially if the servers go offline for a few minutes.

No this will not help catch cheaters it will just tick off more people then it will actually catch cause their game becomes choppy and/or really laggy or they run though their bandwidth allowance when only 1/3 of the month is up and they have super slow net till the end of the month or no net at all.

Punk Buster implemented this technique back in 1999. It worked buitifuly. and lets face it... If these so called games are using there perfered anticheat, why is it also tied into VAC protected servers? and also why dont they work? But the part with the screenshot taking up bandwidth? I dunno what format you use to transfer pictures online but Jpegs and GIFs are less then 200K less then 80K GIF for a full screenshot. although alot depends on the resalution being taken. and no it is not a bad idea.

Shoot. Counterstrike used to have a method of "spraying" a custon picture on the walls in game! this did not lag anyone at all

and if you do retort by asking me why if pounk buster started doing this then why dont they do it anymore if it worked so buitifully, I am not going to tell you cuase i will be wasting my time.

... you realize a "spray" is no where near similar to a screen shot right? Spray 200pixels by 200pixels, at most, you download it once onto your system and even if its animated you're looking at 100k to 200k at most.

A single screenshot is on average 1600pixels by 900pixels to 3840pixels by 2160pixels (or larger) and can be megabytes in size and you can't just upload 1 image, you will need to upload lots of them. I run 1920x1080 and my screenshots are anywhere between 500k and 1 meg depending on whats on the screen.


I personally HATE punkbuster, its a piece of crap that doesn't work as well as VAC. There was also lots of issues I was having with it where in some cases I could not even start up one of my games with punk buster running, which it did all the time... even when I was not playing...

There is a reason why many games have stop using punkbuster. Its not a very popular anti-chat, pretty much only EA uses it now and there are lots of cheaters still in their games.



So no this is a real bad idea and would not work.

IF you actually want games to run this, you need to go contact them devs/publishers of the games because Valve doesn't tell game makers to put anti-cheats in their games, and doesn't do it for them either. Its up to the game makers themselves to decide if they are going to do it and with what anti-cheat. So go bug them if you want it into a game so badly.



Also will you learn to use the edit button, this isn't a chat program where you have to put each thought on its own line.

Oh I know why they don't do it anymore... because it was pointless and chewed up too much bandwidth on people.

Yeah, I just cant seem to find where it says your a forum moderator gwarsbane... I dont understand why you are dictating whats good and whats bad for steam when it was an IDEA to begine with- Something to maybe spark an even better idea along the same lines but different maybe? Right, it's a FORUM. A place for discussions. If you can't handle people telling you that your idea sucks, you might want to stay out of them. By the way: your idea sucks. Screen grabbers are malware and many, many people stay clear of games which implement them as anit-cheat. It has also proven to be pretty useless.
And who do you suggest will shift through the millions of screen grabs, anyway?

What do you think the edemos are that are recorded in counterstrike is? Hmmm? Oh they are not screen shots, they are demos- so yeah lets blast any idea with negativity before something actualy happens and we er i mean the cheaters get caught and banned
