720p from the Couch 1080p+ on the monitor

I am a collage student, and I recently went home for the summer with my parents. I usually play all my games on a 24" 1080p monitor (with KB/M). When I came home, I plugged my TV up to my parents living room TV so my dad could play Call of Duty online (he's stingy, he won't pay for online for Xbox, but I don't blame him for only playing online when I bring my PC home) anyways, their TV is a 32" 720p TV that they don't plan on replacing until it's broken.

I noticed playing my games from couch distance (or on the floor like a child) with an X360 controller that 720p was totally fine. I started to wonder. Would anyone consider building a living room PC for 720p gaming? On the native resolution, it looks as good as anything should. Would you settle for 720p living room gaming ad long as you got good/maxed textures, 60 fps, and AA. As long as I got 60 fps and AA, the game looks flawless from that dustance. Does anyone agree with this? Or is 1080p the absolute minimum, regardless of Couch/Controller, Desk/KBmouse. Should the consoles forget about resolution and focus on framerates? And after 1080p is easy should consoles stop their until they can do higher with higher framerates? Should PC gamers do the same? I'm just very curious what anyone's caveats on resolution and gaming is.

Resolution and visual quality has much to do with screen size and distance.
The reason PC gaming is better at 1080p is simply that you're much closer to the screen. At 1440p the screen is usually bigger.

If you sit 4" away from a 72" TV, you long for UHD content. :P And since the trend goes to bigger and bigger TVs and monitors which are borderline fitting in a normal apartment (seriously, 72"?! Or a 2x26" monitor which take all my desk space?) resolution still plays a big role.

So the setting would dictate prioraty of the resolution over performance?
