browserless version of steam.
I think their should be a "lite" version of steam that only handles two things, your games and your friend list, that's all. it would run faster for low end pcs (not everyone can afford 700-5,000 dollar pcs). it would be like the small view of the current version but without the ability to view any web pages on the client itself. As for me and I am sure many others out there, that not what they are using steam for to begin with as their are way better way to view a web page out there, why waste ton of ram on a process that never being used when you can just min a game, pop up Firefox, look up what ya need, close Firefox and get back to the game without wasting ton of ram all the time in the slight chance you "might" (the important word is might) decide to view a web page. Yes there would be a lack of news updates on the client of this type and can't buy games on it, but you can buy them on the website and it'll be in your library which then you can access from the client to install. it'll also help with the very buggy steamwebhelper.exe problem that is going on with the built-in browser that happening right now too.

everything in steam save for your library believe it or not relies on a web based API. meaning what you want is one that can't even access the store.

better then the current one that use up to 3gbs of ram to do nothing at all thanks to the crappy steamwebhelper.exe that can't be turned off or limited on ram use or number of processing it does right now. i seem 15 of the lil craps running for no reason at all using a total of 3gbs in just themselves alone. so yes i would love one that has that gone and only deals with the library if that what it takes to get steam back into useable status again. cause i had to force my steam to downgrade to the last version to get rid of the ram hungry program that was forced on us all. and don't give me the crap it helps stuff load faster, cause things were loading slower with it and it makes gaming nearly impossible of you dare have 4gbs of ram.

The Steam client has always been a browser.

The steamwebhelpers shouldn't be using 3GB of data. Unless you have tabs open that have things like... videos, images, etc. I guess then all that info would be stored.

3 gigs of ram? Hold the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ phone that's not steam. You probably have some form of malware because I'm not having any kind of leap that huge with mine. I'm fairly certain that if I'm at 1.3 gigs used between my OS, Opera web browser, and steam all at once, then it's not using up 3 gigs by itself.

nope. i don't use any of that type of stuff, i can just turn on steam and 5 of the lil craps turn on with it and use up to 300mbs on there own on top of the 65mbs steam itself use. and you can't stop steamwebhelper.exe from running or making more processing copies. this is a huge flaw that screwing up steam for me, is why i downgraded and haven't turned steam off for the last day and a half. and guess what i am current running steam that what i said should be a thing, the friend list works just fine and so does installing games from the library without a built-in web browser. so yeah, steam itself is not a browser, it just has one built into it.

steam itself is a browser, hell, if you cut out ALL browser functionality, then all it is is a background process, you can't even access the library page, and you'll then have to go all the way to your game's folder to find the exe and make a shortcut.

nope no malware, just steamwebhelper.exe doing what they made it do, waste ram on the rare as crap chance you might use a built-in browser that sucks compared to even ie11...

One open for each tab. Like the Store, the forums, and one for the News pop up (you can see the process end when you close it).

Since it's the actual page (basically, a webpage) the more crap on the page the more RAM it takes up.

then how come it's not happening with me, nor is it happening with TirithRR? Also do you ever play a game on steam? And do you do so without opening up your library? If you answered yes to number one, and no to number two, you used the steam web browser at least once. Also, how do you know for sure you have no malware?

I went to the DotA 2 community page, full of artwork and scrolled down to view all the screenshots and pictures. RAM usage increased.

Once I closed the DotA 2 community page, the ram usage went back down to almost nothing.

So, as suspected, if you use more RAM, the site will use more RAM... surprise surprise.

something tells me OP isn't telling the truth about not using the steam web browser at all.

do you mean something like these:

If so why not use Small Mode from the view inside Steam?

When you switch to Small Mode, the existing default SteamWebHelper processes still are running. You just cannot open more. But you have to switch back to Large mode to use the Community and Forums, which then starts opening SteamWebHelper processes and depending on what you browse, increases the RAM.

Clearly this user is using the Steam Community sites while on the Client, which is why his SteamWebHelper processes are so large.

nope i have steam hidden on my taskbar unless i just turned it on or looking in the store which i rarely ever do to being with, i use it for games and that's all, i like the lil friend list, instant messaging thing, but barely ever use it. and yes even going offline mode doesn't get rid of steamwebhelper.exe at all nor stops the crap program form using ram for no reason.

minimizing something doesn't make it stop doing stuff, if you left it on the store page like that it's no wonder it's using so much with you :spycon:
