Higher bandwidth limits

I would like more options added to the bandwidth limiter on Steam. 25Mb/s is too low for me. I would like a higher limit so I can download faster, while having the bandwidth to still play online games.

I can download at 60Mb/s but the limit can only go up to 25Mb/s... Would be nice if we had other choices because I don't want to download at full speed and be unable to play online smoothly while doing it but I don't really need to have 35Mb/s left for everything else

Most people can't get 60MB/s internet, what you have is probably 60Mb. And 60megabytes is 8 times larger than the actual download speed that may be displayed for you.

Using speedtest.net it tells you your internet speed in bytes not bits. And steam shows download speed in bits not bytes. 8 bytes = 1 bit

There is no limit to bandwidth on Steam. There are people reporting faster then 100 MB download speeds.

When downloading, Steam will always try to download at the fastest speed possible, unless you choose to limit the download speeds in Steam > Settings > Downloads

Try wording it better.

Is less convoluted and more strait forword. It currently reads more like a complaint of not reaching higher speeds, then it does asking for more bandwidth options.

Why is it even a thing that steam download uses all my bandwidth, but only downloading at 330ish kbit/s anyways?


When I download something from my browser I have around 330kbit/s too, but still can use youtube and load websites without problem.
But with steam, games download at the same rate, but for some reaosn take the whole bandwidth, making youtube not even load at 240p.
My speed is 2.9mbit/s btw.

I just watched a guy on youtube install a 2gigabit net connection in his home. Once he had all the hardware installed one of the first tests he did was install games from steam. (trying to find the video again, if i find it I'll post it)

Steam was able to easily hit the 2gigabit download speeds.

Valve basically has a city water main and you are trying to connect up to it with a garden hose. They can pump out far more then you can actually take. So if your connection is only 25megabit per second, then you can only download at 25megabits per second.


BTW you do know that you can set it to "no limit" right?

Steam > View > Downloads > Limit Bandwidth To
Look at the very top of the list, right above 16 KB/s it says no limit.

Because that is your max speed. Steam is a continuous download till its done, if you set it to above 2.9mbit/s it will download using your full connection till its done. This is why you can't do much else while downloading games. set your download limit to something below 2.9mbit/s in steams download setting and while games will take longer to install, you'll be able to do other stuff while you wait.

Youtube streams the videos to you, so it will download, wait, download, wait, download wait. Basically it will only download while you are watching the video, unless you are watching all the videos at once you'll never notice the pausing of the download.
