I think it's interesting that I don't. Either it's a region thing or I have done something to not be shown that stuff. Although I couldn't tell what.
Selective perception.
Basically they want to see anime games so much they don't notice anything else, namely how few anime games there are compared to the rest.
So yeah, you can influence it. If it shows as "recommened", it obviously has a reason to do so.
Scrolling through the 15 featured games in my front page. "Popular new releases" and "Games" can't be unchecked, and the only other option I have checked in "Reccomended for you". Refreshed several times over on both the Steam client and browser. Wasn't keeping count of how many times I refreshed, sorry.
I have only seem some cheap looking free to play dating sim named Crush Crush through all my refreshes, and only because it's "new on Steam". The closest thing to anime I was recommended was FFXIII Lightning Returns.
I do have most of these visual novels marked as "not interested", because I'm not too lazy to actually do stuff to prevent me from seeing things I don't want, unlike some of the posters in this thread. So yes, we can influence it, both ways.
Maybe you're seeing anime style games because they share a tag with some other, usually completely unrelated, game you have played recently. Steams recommendations are silly like that in my experience.
Edit: Tried again after unchecking the "reccomended for you" because I realised I'm stupid. Saw some bullet hell anime game. Other than that, I see nothing different except for the fact I'm being shown less games.
I made my own post of this issue - as Steam got to know me (and after explicitly discouraging VNs and related tags) I've received far less of this but initially it bugged me. I don't see why forcing newer users to see stuff they're put off by until Steam learns their preferences is good for Valve's profit - it could easily make people that are just trying out Steam to conclude it's not for them.
I think without a doubt (from the number of posts about it) Anime VN stuff would be #1 in the list of things people want to block. But that doesn't really matter - if someone doesn't like war stuff they should have the same ability to avoid it.
If new Steam users were presented with a list and told to pick things they like more and things they like less it might help let Steam get to know them quicker and avoid issues like this.
But the best option is just to give people more control of their gaming preference data since Steam's so bad at figuring it out.
I've had Steam since Steam was released, I'm not a new user.
You can't just choose to "Block Anime" because if you did, you'd be blocking the entire store because half the Steam Community thinks it's funny to tag every single game as "Anime," "Nudity," "Psychological Horror," etc.
Ok. Not sure how I cleaned it out. I have a huge wishlist (many aren't actually wishes but just things to watch) and there's zero VN or anime there. Maybe that's why I don't see it much.
they probably should but then again keep in mind that finding reliable mods isnt all that easy
