I've tried the steamcmd method, it does a really poor job, corrupts VTF files and LUA files in my addons.
And I know it's not the addon's fault since it works just fine and the VTF's aren't corrupt in game or when I last had access to them.
I've seen 16 gig thumb drives for only like 4 bucks on sale. I got my 128 gig thumb drive for only 40 bucks a few years ago.
You can get 8TB backup drives for under 200.
Getting a newer bigger driver as your main drive or as a backup seems like a much better idea then waiting literally years for Valve to get around to this if they like the idea, which I doubt they would bother with because people should be storing their stuff on their own drives.
If I were a choosing beggar I might try using GitHub for that sort of thing.
But I'd prefer the argument of using a properly large drive. And/or some cloud storage like dropbox or google drive.
