Check the currently existing requests for being able to change your account name.
No, you cannot, and it was likely his profile name not his username.
Is there a front end to do it? Nope, doesnt seem like it because of the reasons below.
Manually editing records is time consuming and introduces risk of making a mistake and corrupting the database.
Sooo...time consuming, risky, and not to mention pointless would be the actual operational reasons they wont do this.
...and I dont blame them one tiny iota of a bit.
You dont have any kind of proof of this. They could just as easily show screenshots from 2 different accounts or edit an image. Dont be gullible.
So, whats prevent you from doing the same as the guy did?, whats the point of this thread then if you CAN (according to the reddit post) change your steam username?
Also why would Valve waste their time by making such article if you can change your username by contacting steam support?.
Look dude, there are people who claimed that they have had legit VAC bans lifted as well.
None of them were ever true. It is FAR more likely someone made another account and a story and you ate it hook, line, and sinker.
If youve never had to deal with a gigantic, ancient, ad-hoc database, you dont know what youre talking about.

All those hijackers needed was the login name.
Nowhere does Steam tell you to keep your login name secret, even though you should.
Unfortunately, if hijackers have already discovered your login name...well, now you're screwed on that front.
Steam SHOULD allow people to change their login names. And it IS technically possible for them to make it possible, since it's just data management after all. It's just how much of a hassle it is for them and when they'll get around to making it possible.
I did the change as a test and found several flaws with the process, such as trophy information been out of sync etc.
They were able to revert the process stating that all information would be corrected which turned out to be true.
Account name changing in theory is a good idea but needs to be guaranteed that it is 100% effective.
None of that is actually relevant. They are literally cosmetic issues that have no practical reason as again, only you see your login name. So if your login name is penislover12 then no one but you will know that regardless of how cringeworthy it is.
Unfortunately it will never be 100% effective with all the games that integrate into steam and the complexity of the database. Unfortunately they made a poor design decision when they made your account name the primary key of the database and changing that is just too risky for a 100% cosmetic enhancement.
