We grew up watching Star Trek.
Why not let people dream that humans could be better?
Non sequitur much?
am I also not letting you smear your private parts in jam and letting the next door neighbours dog lick it off?
No you do you. But when you make an OBJECTIVE claim, then sorry but there's only one reality.
The fact that you're noting that there are situations where the Jester is inappropriate does however not mean it should be removed or that one should make such a big deal about it. Sometimes things are inappropriate, sometimes they feel uncomfortable. It's called life, deal with it.
But my point is that the idea that they're not being used to insult is false. This is the argument that has been offered by some people in this thread -- such as Start_Running, whose post I replied to. He's tried repeatedly to deny the idea that it's being used as an insult.
Meanwhile, while I don't currently advocate for removing the awards system, I certainly wouldn't mind it if it were removed. However, I understand some people enjoy the awards, so perhaps a better idea would be the following: simply make the awards system more transparent -- to make it clear who's giving what awards. This way, it can't be used to take anonymous potshots at people.
This would be an excellent solution, not only for those awards some consider insulting but also for others - I'd like to know who liked my guides, screenshots or whatever.
It could even help guide makers better understand their audience.
The hester award is a tool just like any other - can be used for good or not. To ban it just because of the potential of someone using it that might hurt someone's fee fees (even though they cannot possibly know the context of the intent) is just silly.
