IPv6 Support
When does the steam enviroment support IPv6?

Nowadays ISP's don't get new IPv4 ranges anymore. Valve should be a pioneer like they were in 2003 when they found steam.

Regards

I really hope you realize that won't get resolved within a very short period of time.

Maybe it will come out later!

Well, it has been known that IPv4 blocks are running out fore more than one decate. But soon you can not ignore this problem anymore.

I would be pleased to get an information if Valve is working on it.

And what exactly do you expect Valve to do?

To support IPv6? A couple of things: any time Steam sends an IP address (e.g. when setting up networking for peer-to-peer games), have the capability to send an IPv4 address or an IPv6 address or both, and have all Steam servers have both an IPv4 address and an IPv6 address so that they can be reached via either protocol.

This is not ludicrously exotic; plenty of people out there are running dual-stacked. Google has 18% of requests being IPv6, Facebook’s data centres are entirely IPv6 internally and they translate from IPv4 at the border.

It should be pointed out that for the peer-to-peer gaming case in particular IPv6 has a massive advantage over IPv4; since IPv6 addresses aren’t scarce like IPv4 addresses, there’s no need to use tricks like NAT to conserve them. Your LAN can use publically routable IPs rather than private ones; so no need to reconfigure your router to try to get games to work, or any of the NAT-punching or tunnnelling shenanningans you might need now.

Wouldn't likely help if the ISP you're using doesn't..

I read somewhere that IPv6 is at around 10% across the world. Some places have it higher some places have it lower.

Now this is after its been around for about 20 years.... So don't expect to get it anytime soon. Heck most peoples net boxes and routers don't even support it yet and I'm pretty sure switching to it would pretty much kill many games that connect using IPv4 and don't have any devs still working on them.

Again, it won't get resolved in a short period of time. I did not say that it won't ever. In short keep patient.

What are you talking about?

In those 20 years ISP's and network guys has tried to sit out the problem of IPv4. What's the problem? There are hardly any new IPv4 address blocks. With IPv6 this problem will be gone.

NAT 6to4 4to6 was a miscarriage. A lot of ISP's has to use IPv6 cause they don't get any IPv4 addresses anymore. Valve should be ready to make their services IPv6 proof. I bet they have a plan howevera lot of people have to use 6to4 to get into the steam network.

The ipv4 problem has been known since the 90s.

No one said that you have to switch from IPv4 to IPv6. Valve should doit like google, fb or other big internet companies Let their servers be reachable over IPv4 and IPv6

ANd what makes you think their services aren't?
See at least to the greater internet. Ipv4 is still a thing. A major thing and any solution will have to smoothely handle interconnect and cross compatability for a long time.

Yup and most services have already or are currently quietly coding in IPv6 support. WHile still using IPv4.

I don't think anyone with IPv6 has a problem connecting to steam.

Try to connect with a native IPv6 connection to steam... You will see that you aren't able to connect.

I don't know if you were thinking that I am thinking IPv4 is bad. There are just no addresses left. ISP's have problem to provide an IP-address for their costumers. Some of them are using grade carrier nat which is just like another miscarriage.

if big Internet services don't support IPv6, ISP's and costumers will recognize perfomance problems cause some people are sitting out the IPv6 problem

Big name services won't see the need to invest in support until a sufficient market base is using it. It's the catch 22 . This is why the zip disk never really took off,

do you know what you are talking about? how do you use steam without an IP address?

Is it possible to be on the internet without an IPv4 address?
