I am not sure why this would be unacceptable. It's been a thing for game related friends list for decades. Some without the option to disable.
Still, it's silly to need a workaround for this.
I don't know if that has changed, but that hides your recent activity on profile anyway.
In case I am wrong though: go to your profile settings and under privacy change Game Details to private and it will hide what game you are playing while still being logged into Steam Friends. Only other side effect is that it also hides your game hours too I am pretty sure.
EDIT: looks like I was a bit late.
His profile could be set to Friends Only. Also I can confirm it still works. But I interpreted that he's complaining about the setting not being Private by default.
Which doesn't matter because it could be friends only and game details also friends only.
Game details are friends-only by default currently upon account creation which is "enough" anyway. i don't know if this was change in the past 2 years, but that was the case.
Read post #6 again, it doesn't seem as if you understand anything i said.
Again: [if] it was friends only [YOU] nor [me] would not know.
The options exist OP, it's up to you to choose to utilize them.
I'll take that wager.

What now?
Interesting. Though I'm going to guess this has to do with friends seeing something than random people he probably wont ever talk to.
But yea, I don't see it an issue imo.
This actually didn't exist until a bit of GDPR controversy a while ago [2 years ago??]
We're lucky it exists now, as well as being able to hide your friends' list completely.
A better request is to disable friend invites completely seeing how all the 'scams' begin with scammers adding you. But no, don't think that'll ever happen.
If you are embarrassed about playing a certain game then either don't play it, get it on another account, or don't have the friends chat enabled.
