The answer: Ask the developers of the game to provide a beta branch for older versions.
Great...
Join the thread too.
That feature never existed. The wording in the message simply changed.

"No, you are wrong. I remember not having to update my games !"
Nope. Never existed.

There's always the option of going to console.
I mean most console games have the option to play the game without the update you just can't play online. The only time an update should be forced if it fixes a critical error. You shouldn't just lump everybody in the derp derp boat just cause a some people would not realize they should update their game to see if it fixes a bug before calling support. But people still complain on the forums and probably support about being scammed or banned, you can't stop progress just cause of a few people.
Tl;DR: People are gonna be derpy anyway, so just give us an option to choose when we can update our stuff unless the update is critical.
Second, who is the "they" you're referring to anyway? Surely not OP. If you're talking about a group, then it's surely not amazing that a group can display contradictory ideas, is it?
"It amazes me. They complain about candidate A and they complain about candidate B, and they vote for candidate A and they vote for candidate B!" - an electoral commentator soon to be fired from their job
You like auto updates, good for you. You should have the option to have them. I don't like them, and they disrupt an entire house holds worth of gamers, I should be able to turn them off. You used to only have to update when you played a game. Why did that change? To what end was that changed? The option was there, why was it removed? I'm sick of companies making their product worse in the name of 'stream lining the experience' or some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If I wanted ♥♥♥♥ I didn't have to think about I wouldn't have built a computer in the first place.
This is literally the same vein of ♥♥♥♥ that got me to STOP console gaming.

To you, you may not think it's necessary to patch the game and think it's not a bug, or an critical, but to the Devs they believe it maybe an issue, or simply wanted to improve the game, or to even add things to the game, yet that's a problem, oh no, they want to fix something, improve something, or even add something, let get our pitchforks, and torches and teach them a lesson, by complaining how dare they even try to fix something, improve something, or even add something to the game, shame on them, SHAME!!! But for real, what do you expect, if you're going to play MMO's, multiplayer focused games, or very popular games that has co-op, and multiplayer, then obviously it's more likely they're going to get an update at some point, either fix glitches, bugs, re/balancing things, or to even add new content that may be free to you, but oh no, that's a bad thing is what some people are saying, how dare they do that, again let get our pitchforks, and torches....
Now onto the whole big data issue this is separate, if you're on a limited data plan, maybe should reconsider your options either getting better plan, or go with a better service. Now before someone lift thier pitchforks, and torches, and say, but we don't got plans better than we got, or we only got one service, and if that's the case, maybe should start making an effort for your community, and by that, I mean reach out to other services to come to your area, or to try to get them to offer better plans, but if this was an political issue in your area, then this is something you must make an effort with/agasint them, because it will either get worse for you, or remain the same, while all the other areas around you keep on getting better deals, better service, leaving you behind, that means you need to get the community to make a stand, to make the changes happen for the community, I have talk to enough people that are from Michigan, Georgia, Washington where some parts it's a battle to even get better services, because people too busy trying to fill their pockets by some of the ISP so they wouldn't have competitions in the area, which is kind of the whole point to make an effort to make sure competitions exist so you would get better deals, and service, I know someone that's from Michigan making a stand agasint some he call them "fat cats" trying to fill their pockets, and he making a demand, and got the community to stand up to force them to bring better services to their area, which they wanted, and of course things don't happen overnight, but the longer to take action, the longer it takes for changes to happen.
