Using Chrome Browser for Steam is getting worse.
Chrome is bad as it is it uses lot of RAM running multiple back process. Running Steam on it is very much impossible these days as inventory section triggers almost 1 GB RAM usage and a trade window 2 GB. Most times Chrome hangs up and prefers to crash than run. Need find a solution to make it work properly using less resources.

Also listing multiple items for sale in market is impossible on steam there is no option to choose all items of same kind or choose how many you needed at a go one by one for mass listing. Please include it.

So Steam is using your last 2GB of RAM? Sounds like you need more RAM. You just think software should arbitrarily use less RAM and your opinion about RAM usage matters? Well I've got some bad news... but feel free to get into software development and show all the morons writing Chrome how it's done.

I've never really had issues with Chrome and have better things to do than fuss over normal RAM usage. I've also been watching people whine incessantly about browser RAM usage for twenty years. However much RAM a browser has been using people seem to feel it should be using half as much. From where they got that opinion I don't know. But it's been ingrained for decades now.

I have 4 GB RAM how is it not sufficient? The problem has gotten far worse last month onwards in fact. At least till last Winter sale it was OK. I noticed Firefox also uses up same amount of RAM when Steam Inventory is loaded or trade window. It just does not snap as Chrome does but takes time.

4GB of RAM is barely the minimum requirements to run a modern OS. You can't even run most modern 64-bit games with so little RAM. Your problem isn't steam. Your problem is your Poltato PC.

Yes because you know, its a browser? Do you have some magical way to make a browser that has a tiny footprint? Unless you're gonna make everyone use wget.

The OS itself can easily use 3.5GB to 4GB for Windows 10. That is not Steams issue, that is a user issue. 16GBs minimum recommended has been a thing for a very, very long time. You've been basically overwhelming your storage drive every time you go to game due to having low memory by using the drive as virtual memory.

lol @ the idea of "get a better computer because the glorified game launcher is not working well"

Frankly speaking, Steam used to do just fine without a browser-based library interface. (The built-in browser in the Steam client doesn't count, and one can get away with not using it at all anyway.)

These days, if you want to cut out the browser-based crap, you can launch Steam with the parameter -no-browser. This cuts out all browser-based features, but Steam does spawn fewer processes, use less resources, and take less time to launch. It looks half-broken -- you need to use Small Mode or Big Picture Mode (and game uninstalls only work in BPM), but that's because Valve didn't properly design a Steam client edition that doesn't use the browser.

Clearly you missed the whole 4GB of RAM part.

Not sure if you're trying to be purposely obtuse. but 4GB of RAM is barely enough to run the base OS. 'X takes up too much RAM' is going to be 'a problem' for literally any program that runs CEF or any program that has a browser built into it.

If your car has a lawnmower engine in it, the solution is not to take the doors and windows off to reduce weight

You're assuming that the user running Win10 or something I guess. Whereas a ton of games on Steam itself take far, far fewer resources to run.

Fundamentally, Steam doesn't actually need to be a browser.

"The user should have these resources available" doesn't justify using those resources inefficiently.

That's also assuming the OS is 64 bit, so if it's 32 bit it's only 3.5GB usable of the 4GB.

The user should have the resources available for basic operations especially when even browsing can easily consume that much memory with a few tabs and videos, that's how it works. You should always have more than double what the OS requires easily depending on the tasks you want to do, you don't build the PC to have barely more memory than what the OS consumes.

You should be asking why they're hitting 1GB when others are reporting 90-260MBs, not to mention chrome itself is inefficient, so why would Steam be to blame when others see significantly less but the root is googles software? Even settings or Lite modes can result in far less usage, but 4GB of RAM is not Steams issue for a user having 2002-2004 amounts of RAM. Even an SSD can make up for the lack of RAM, though I don't recommend it but it's very cheap for an entry level unit to offset that fact.

The root problem is Chromium being inefficient, but on the other hand one could see the root problem as the fact that Steam is using Chromium in the first place.

I'm not saying that OP shouldn't have more RAM; I'm saying that Steam ought not to be the thing hogging it, regardless of how much there is.

I wish minimal version of Steam client offering only game startup and Steam authentication services was a thing. My old computer had Steam eat up noticeable amount of RAM and CPU.

Those two things plus Steam DRM, since that's the only reason you need Steam to be running while the game is running, rather than just for the download.

Unfortunately valve will NEVER allow steam to be fully functional in a minimal state ever again. For years now they've been plagued with mobile design trends and are creating new aspects of steam primarily for aesthetic purposes (points shop, new friends, library) rather than function and moddability (old library, old storefront)

With this they've been almost intentionally cutting out old aspects of the client and store and making reverting completely impossible (no current valve games launch on the old client because they rely on unnecessary features like censorship from the new API the client now uses)
