[STEAM Profile Feature] Profile welcoming / background music
Hello,

It would be nice to add an option to any steam profile where anyone from outside (friends) can listen the profile's music set by the profile owner.

Like i want to set a music / game OST in the background while is stay on my own profile or anyone who visit my profile.

Thanks !

Also the only. The absolute only! way this would ever happen is with music provided by Steam.

Hey mate!

Remember what I said before on the other thread... They already sell game soundtracks, all they have to do is strike a deal with publishers to allow users to use the soundtracks they own on their profiles, which would in turn boost soundtrack sales on steam.

I think eventually this will be a thing. Steam has already shown that it will monetize every single part of profile customization. And they already sell music bits that play when you are the MVP in a round in CSGO. They just haven't gotten around to this yet.

People don't want music blasting unexpectantly in their face. Especially considering that there is a 99.9 % chance they don't like the music.

If Steam makes this a thing, it will only be unexpected once. After the first time you'll be expecting it. And I don't want to me assumptions about you but I highly doubt gamers dislike 99.9% of videogame music out there.

Even when the majority of the people wants said feature, its still Valves decision to add it, or not.

People have suggested this for years, if Valve ever had the intention to add such feature, they would have added it a long time ago.

Yeah, it's Valve's decision to add it or not. Just like it was Valve's decision to create a suggestions and ideas forum for people to make threads like these, and just like it was Valve's decision to monetize every single aspect of profile customization lately. You didn't really think it was gonna stop at showcases right? I don't put it outside of the realm of possibility that this is something they might consider.
Is it hyperbolic for me to say that reading this idea made me a bit sick?

I don't think a music player on Steam profiles would be a good idea. I like viewing profiles while not hearing music as it would help me read walls of text in their info boxes. I also think it would be a horrible decision because someone might click on one's profile and be reviled by the music, not only because it's loud, but also because it might belong to a certain genre they despise.

I agree with everyone's statement on "Don't turn Steam into MySpace."

I don't like MySpace.

:qr:

Looks like it's something people want.
Sometimes there's a great deal of people who'd like something even though other people scoff at the idea.
That's why WoW Classic is a thing now.

Just because people haven't experienced it.
If you would know the internet around the millenium change, you wouldn't want it either. It's quite telling that people who are against it are the older ones while people who want it are too young to have experienced it. I mean seriously, "I don't know what MySpace is"?!

I can only repeat myself:
There is a reason you won't see this stuff on other social media anymore. There is a reason any modern browser allows you to quickly identify and nuke or mute any tab with sound playing in it.

It's hard to give examples on how it used to be as ... duh ... sites had to change or lose visitors.
That's the first example I could find with a quick search
https://youtu.be/h8PdKM2-mhU?t=160
start at 2:40

MySpace allowed for total customisation via HTML btw, so this example site is actually pretty tame. Usually it was accompanied by either a dark background with dark font or a (tiled) colourful picture that made things unreadable.
this gets suggested now and again, which obviously means there are people that want it. it is the same people tarnishing the suggestion over and over again, with their usual entitlement of wanting to dictate what other people have on their profiles.

they don't want to visit a profile where the music is played.. then stop visiting random profiles.
they don't like myspace.. good for you.. nobody cares.

just look at the other suggestions threads made, and you will see the same people copy pasting their posts in the new thread.

these are the same people that also said the awards would be the end of the forums and yet here we are. the end did not come, their prophecy did not come to light..
(reddit karma etc etc ruined reddit.. it will ruin steam....)
but no matter, they will cry about any suggestion made, because they feel like they are the gatekeepers of what is a valid and meaningful suggestion.
(as if valve hired them, but they did not. they are just users like you.)

The best thing to do is just to make your suggestion and not listen to these people as their opinions do not matter. Valve do check the suggestions and if THEY see them as valid THEY will implement these suggestions. just because a suggestion has not been implemented and was suggested years ago.. does not mean valve might never consider it.

in itself, the suggestion makes sense. the steam store sells soundtracks, they have a music player. it would make sense to allow the consumers to do more with it.
(as more and more people reaches above level 270 something and unlocks all the showcases, valve surely would feel some sort of need to add more showcases.)

Yes, as I said: the only way is by Steam providing the music. And they will not allow OSTs of any game as this will inevitably lead to low effort games supplying you with the most annoying "music" or copyright infringements.
And for this to happen Steam needs a streaming license which is expensive. And not international. Look up Youtube Vs GEMA for example.

Game music works because it's complimentary to the game and a big part of the atmosphere. Having an Epic (capital E) orchestral that swells while riding towards the end boss of a fantasy game, ending in a staccato accompanied by the fearsome roar of a dragon. Or killing demons to driving metal beats encouraging you to go to the next arena instead of lingering and looking for boring collectibles.
Writing movie or game music is an art form vrey different from "just" creating music or even the industrial processing of radio-friendly pop music. Or our infamous Volksmusik.

But on their own, it often loses a lot.
True, people will still listen to it outside of a game. But if you don't like orchestrals, you probably won't listen to the Witcher's soundtrack on your commute. If you don't like metal, you won't listen to Doom's soundtrack in the gym.

If you are sitting at home browsing Steam you are likely to either have your own music already or something else you or people in your room are listening to or deliberately chose silence.

There are a lot of people that ask Valve to give out free games because they are poor. Just because a suggestion is popular, doesn't mean it should even be considered.

And just like all the other threads its been explained dozens of times when you buy a soundtrack on steam you are buying a LICENSE for YOU and ONLY YOU to listen to it. Playing it online for others or even a bunch of other people locally requires a different license which is FAR more expensive than the free to a few bucks you paid on steam. They MIGHT include in that single use license that it can be included in game play videos, but there is a reason why most youtubers turn the in game music off and its not just because most of the time in game music sucks. Unless you read every license you will never know if you can include the music in the game play video. Even Youtube suggests you turn off in game music when you upload a video.

A license to play for others is thousands of dollars per month more expensive which Valve is not going to suck up, so that you can play a song for people that spend seconds to minutes on your profile. All those legit music streaming sites pay thousands of dollars a month so a song can be played on there.

You and others just don't seem to understand the concept that Valve will not foot this bill. And many don't seem to understand that uploading of their "own" song will never happen because that opens Valve to copyright infringement which could easily cause Valve to be sued out of existence.

So again no just because a lot of people ask for it does not mean its a good idea. It doesn't mean Valve should even bother looking into it.

I have to strongly disagree, my friend.

Good music stands on it's own, even when outside of the game or movie it was made for.

I listen to videogame soundtracks often on my way to work and while at work, while cooking, drawing, etc.

Once you are exposed to something good, it doesn't really matter if you are a fan of the genre or not. Most movie goers aren't fans of orchestral music but they still love John William's and Danny Elfman's compositions. Their compositions are regarded as Iconic. Likewise, most anime fans aren't fans of Jazz but Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack is loved by those who watched the show.
I can play BFG Division in my car and my co-workers who aren't fans of metal can still enjoy it.

One of those co-workers listens to Oblivion and Skyrim music while he works, so I know I'm not alone.

And anecdotal evidence is anecdotal.

Usually the first thing I do in a game is turning the music way down.
The longer I play the game, the more likely I am to completely turn it of. GTA-like games for example. BFG Division you just named? Instant mute. I can't stand this kind of metal. I can tolerate it in Doom. To some extend.

As I said, movie and game soundtracks work with the movie. If you have watched the movie, you have a certain association with it already. If you hear the theme of Pirates of the Carribean (or Monkey Island) you don't just listen to the music and think "pirates ♥♥♥♥ yeah!". You think about the movies and your favourites scenes. Jack Sparrow standing on top of the mainmast, Turner and Norrington crossing swords, Barbossa's crews boarding the ship, ... "You fight like a cow". Or if you haven't seen it, it simply doesn't give you anything.
Or Lord of the Rings' "Concerning Hobbits'" winds chime which invokes images of the Shire and its green meadows and hills.

There is a lot of psychology behind it to set the moot and make it memorable. And music is one of our strongest memories next to smell.
Test yourself: play a song on your playlist you haven't heard for a while and see what you can remember.
Music even has one of the biggest effects in treatment of dementia.

What's considered good depends on each individual anyway.

And they don't change the fact that's it's bloody annoying to have music forced on you.
In future just imagine every post of mine you read is accompanied by this masterpiece:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4
(And yes, I genuinely think it's a masterpiece! I even listen to it at work much to the detriment of my co-workers if they realize after two hours that they also listened to it ever so quitely through my headphones :lunar2019grinningpig:)
It is a masterpiece.
I like you a bit better now.
Playing music has been considered as bad netiquette for more than two decades. Even browsers have features to show you which tab is the one playing-that-damn-tune-nobody-asked-for so you can close it.

Not only that but then there's the big elephant in the room which is broadcasting rights. That thing costs money and not a small ammount. And not leaving that elephant there's the gigantic convoluted mess that's international license rights for music. (I love the example of how House M.D. Opening didn't have 'Teardrop' as the opening song in several countries because of difering licensing rights)

You guys are suggesting Steam to play music on your profiles when the very Blizzard's Official Twitch channel had to cut off the sound of Metallica's live performance during their very own Blizzcon streaming to avoid DMCA takedowns From the very group that was playing at the official event

That's how convoluted the 'playing music over the internet' business is.

oh well there always a welcome music
