Quite a few contemporary clients also do not allow for editing sent messages, even insofar as one assumes “catching up” is desirable or necessary.
i'll go away and think about what I've done.
Would it be nice? Sure. And I know Discord lets you do that. But I wouldn't agitate for it.
I do frequently edit my forum posts, since they're meant to be polished. My chat lines, on the other hand, show you that I often don't type perfectly the first time, but I let it slide.
I do edit my lines when using Discord/Slack, but in most cases it's not something that can't simply be replaced by just typing out the replacement and sending a second chat line. The only exception I can think of is when you have something that's meant as a pinned notice, like a line of chat used to say the rules. But there's a way around that too; on IRC, people would just host the rules on a separate webpage and stick its URL in the chat topic.

For direct messaging, it's not really a standard as most people in direct messaging would abuse this for scamming purposes, and Discord is full of people that target and scam Steam users so it's not the best example.
For posts/comments and things likely to be seen and reported if an issue it makes sense, direct messaging is just "double check before hitting send".
That said, the ability to edit messages wouldn't make scamming any worse than it already is anyway.
