The performance hasn't changed much for me since the library UI upgrade, I only once had a crash just after the library UI was released.
Whether the look is appealing is subjective anyway. I'm not a fan either, but it's not my program.
You might want to try and clear the download and web cache to see if that changes something.
Sounds like a system issue on your end, no issues here, and none of my friends seem to have any problems with it.
And the new UI works noticeably less efficiently than the old one. Both technically and for user convenience.
Sure, they wanted to add features like the dynamic collection, but it's not like we all want to use that.
If they at least reimplemented the old UI, even with new code, that would have been half-nice of them, but no. Even Galaxy offers a choice between the Steam-like tile view (which has more options for text display than Steam does) and list view.
It would be better if they just reimplemented the old VGUI UI.
...well, to be fair, it'd be ideal if they just let a version of Steam capable of launching games be able to run as a command line program. Then people could build whatever UI they wanted off of that.
Steam uses 0.0 to 0.1% of my CPU, I'm fairly certain there's nothing wrong with it. It's also far from a general mobile app, but it does have its own which of course still looks and feels great compared to other apps, which seem to look and behave in a similar manner as each other and not Steams app.
I generally only have issues with Steam during maintenance day, or when they or any ISP the traffic is going through has issues suddenly, but that's about it which is already rare for me. Random bugging out, freezing, crashing or otherwise usually points to something system related including settings, background apps, resource usage, temperature, instability (power, memory voltage/timings/etc).
If you're having issues, it's usually best to attempt troubleshooting & resolving it before suggesting things to Steam as if it's their fault.
Job protection for someone I guess, probably the same Muppet who makes the client go into fisher price mode uninstalling a game.
Well you've got one group of users who are constantly crying how dated the UI looks and it needs to be modernized. You've got another group of users who will wail at every change because the UI they're used to clearly the optimal one, never mind all the wailing that occurred the last time it was updated.
And then you have a majority of users who don't care. Steam still functions, the updated pages aren't alien and are functionally very similar to the previous pages. They don't have an intense aversion to change or an intense attachment to the status quo.
Websites and UI's change. That's not going to stop. It's fine to have opinions about design. Whatever your current favor design paradigm is, it's never going to stay in vogue for long. Crying about it ain't going to help.
I'm sitting here unable to download any games, and half my library has gone missing (it's in a different folder that Steam no longer recognizes as a library, and I can no longer add it.)
Steam is damn convinced all of a sudden with this update, that I have no free hard drive space (there is 500gb free) no matter what I do, or any instructional process I follow to fix it.
People complain about game developers not having testers, but this is a much bigger issue, because now there is no access to the games.
As opposed to joining the mob who incessantly complains about every update?
Well there's often a question, if this is a problem that hundreds of millions, the majority of users aren't experiencing. How much of it is a Valve/Steam issue versus a user/system issue?
I know users don't like being told it's their problem because it's only occurring on their system, or such a small minority of systems. But sometimes that's just the reality. Not every user complaint is actionable by Valve. And it's really hard not to say, "well how come the rest of us don't have this issue?"
I'm not alone, I just am running into both problems simultaneously, after the update broke the split library (and I shouldn't have left it split, fine, that is on me for trying to keep things organized)
Many users over the years have tried to accomplish multiple libraries on the same drive, much to Valve's disregard, as well as have had the issue with Steam not properly understanding the free space on the drive.
So when you say that they can't account for a small minority of systems... over 17 years, you don't think enough people have reported on the hard drive space bug for instance, for that to be eliminated?
Also, this update literally was partially marketed to "improves the software’s storage management feature"
generic Google results:
steam you do not have enough disk space
About 15,600,000 results (0.72 seconds)
steam multiple libraries on the same disk drive
About 25,100,000 results (0.82 seconds)
"selected drive already has a steam library folder"
About 12,500,000 results (0.72 seconds)
That is the error you get with a FRESH install of steam, no games installed, trying to establish a different folder for your steam library.
Still going to blame my system?
To pre-empt the wHy Do YoU eVeN nEeD tHaT? --- Games that can be heavily modded, require a far less deeply rooted folder structure to crash less, and perform better, i.e. anything made by Bethesda. Look at any Wabbajack instructional text for context
I don't suggest using google results as evidence of such things. Often the first page or two are closely related, but after that you get only "steam" or "library" ect. in the result.
If we put it in quotation marks for an exact search, we get:
About 1,680 results (0.42 seconds)
Something far more closer to the real numbers, yet not all will still fit what you searched for.
Not to mention the issue predates the latest patch as well, so we can't really say that the patch caused it.
"Correlation is not causation" as the saying goes.

Never had those issues with Steam.
Are your games on an external hdd?
