At least, somewhat random. Maybe it will hold you over if Valve decides to do a Random shelf.
Yes, kinda... But it potentially includes all games in my library and not those who i especially mark as "Games I want to play next" by adding them to a specific collection.
You don't mark the games as "Games I want to play next". It does include all games in your library.
It seem to prioritize games you have no or little playtime on as well as an algorithm to determine the list order.
There is also a 3rd party method would well too:

This one doesn't seem to require a log-in.

Yes I understand that and that is exactly the problem.
I have already created a collection of games i'm interested in playing next, but it has become to large to comprehend. I would like to see a random selection of these games with nice large images on a shelf when i open my library.
The fancy algorithm that is in place is nice, but it includes all games in my library and that's not what I want. (It would however be a solution to my problem if you COULD mark games for that fancy Play Next algorithm)
So you want a "select from group" type option.
Not sure if something like that it is enough demand. Most seem to ask for help finding a game in their overall library to play.
But it is up to Valve and they have surprised people before.
Well a simple sort by "Random" would be enough for my use case and potentially other use cases i haven't thought of
And that was what I provided, then you added you wanted to choose what games were in the list.
Do you want one for your entire library or to create a group it draws from? So far it seems you have stated both.
What you provided is a "Random selection of steam games from your library" by adding the "Play Next" shelf.
What I propose is the ability to sort __any__ shelf display aka __any__ already existing collection by "Random". I literally mean adding the item "Random" to the dropdown menu of "Select by" for any regular shelf in the steam library. The dropdown which currently includes a wide range of sorting options as i stated in my original post.
I dont want the "Play Next" mechanism changed, i was simply stating that it could __in theory__ also solve my specific problem. My suggestion is however more flexible and simpler...
The problem is:
Play Next Shelf still with the same games since the release. No updates, even after a massive games tested.
Some times a new game on my library is shown on this shelf, so it doesnt looks like a real random games, more like a pre-scripted list.
Still using 3rd party tools, like SteamDB but a longer way than just open Steam
