I would also like this feature.
You can just decline the requests you don't like and blacklist if necessary
As for anyone who says "just decline", you are missing the point. If someone gets a lot of friend invites from different people, this can become annoying and tiresome. What's wrong with just cutting out the middleman and allow us to just turn off friend invites?
And what does that have to do with anything? Even if someone has a reason to add another if that person that is receiving the friend request doesn't want it, it'll be auto declined already with out dealing with that person.
Also, I don't think that higher friends count makes your opinion more valuable than mine. It's not like they elected you to express their point of view.
If a receiving person doesn't want it, he can decline or ignore it. Also I think there are browser plugins letting you autodecline if you wish
Having the ability to make your profile private to EVEN FRIENDS shows Valve is willing to add things that keep you from being social. Also, there's restrictions on how many comments a person can make on your profile, doesn't stop you from being able to block them. So why should invite spam stop you from being able to turn off friend invites?
Also, name one actual legit reason someone would need to add me for. In all my ten years on Steam, there has never been an urgent reason to add me. The only people who claim to have an urgent reason are people trying to scam me.
And yes just because there are 3rd party programs and add-ons for browser does not mean that those at Valve should not make their platform even better with QoL updates or additions...
If a business / game / program relies on others to fix or make something better it's not a good way of doing things.
I can name several, but I think you're mixing legit with urgent, these words aren't synonims. A legit reason is e.g. if a person is your friend IRL and wants to keep connected on Steam. Another one is someone who enjoyed playing with you in a multiplayer game and wants to play with you again.
You may have your own legit reasons to decline these requests, though. Did I answer your question?
To be honest, I have nothing against this suggestion, but I'm trying to explain it's unlikely to be a priority for Valve. It doesn't help to sell more games or to make people aware of new games (it may even harm these goals a little). And those who desperately need this feature have already found an alternative
What could be that important that you have to request a stranger to befriend you?
