Option to prevent people sending u friend requests?
So from time to time i get a friend request (i think from online games)(was happening more often when my profile was public) and its kinda annoying me, since i am not interested in adding random people to my friends list, nor making "friends" online. I just wan't to play games on my account. Please consider adding an option so people can't send u a friend request or anyhow interact with u on steam.

Imagine being in your own house in a random room with door closed and imagine random can be able to come knocking on your room (room doors, not main house doors) doors and asking if u want to be their friends.. ye i see this issue in the same fashion. Again, please just add an option so the people can decide if they want to be bothered by random people or not.
Everytime this is asked for I agree, this should be a toggled option on our account to allow or not allow people to add us to be friends.

It should have been an option over a decade ago. It's pretty sad that we don't have it yet.

Agreed

I would also like this feature.

Steam has already has a requirement of 5 usd spent before you can send friend invites. It already has a limit on how many friend requests you can send daily/weekly. So sending mass spam invites is rather hard today.
You can just decline the requests you don't like and blacklist if necessary
I requested this earlier but it went mostly ignored. Glad to see people want this.

As for anyone who says "just decline", you are missing the point. If someone gets a lot of friend invites from different people, this can become annoying and tiresome. What's wrong with just cutting out the middleman and allow us to just turn off friend invites?

Valve wants to encourage you to participate in social activity. It enriches your life and brings them extra sales in the long term. That's why I think this option won't be implemented, it would make much more sense to make restrictions on mass invite spam, and they are already implemented. What if a person has a legit reason to send you a friend request?

Having Steam friends does not encourage you to buy things. You don't have to have friends to play multiplayer or MMOs, I have alot of people on my friends list that I hardly play with and meet way more people in multipleplayer games and don't add to friends (but you seem to be an expert on the subject with only 69 friends...)

And what does that have to do with anything? Even if someone has a reason to add another if that person that is receiving the friend request doesn't want it, it'll be auto declined already with out dealing with that person.

On the contrary, having a lot of friends makes you exposed to a lot of game titles. Even if you don't look at the activity feed, your friends list shows exactly what games are they playing. And if a title is played by many, it's natural to get curious about the game. Knowing the game's name is a first step to buying it.
Also, I don't think that higher friends count makes your opinion more valuable than mine. It's not like they elected you to express their point of view.

If a receiving person doesn't want it, he can decline or ignore it. Also I think there are browser plugins letting you autodecline if you wish

Having the ability to make your profile private to EVEN FRIENDS shows Valve is willing to add things that keep you from being social. Also, there's restrictions on how many comments a person can make on your profile, doesn't stop you from being able to block them. So why should invite spam stop you from being able to turn off friend invites?

Also, name one actual legit reason someone would need to add me for. In all my ten years on Steam, there has never been an urgent reason to add me. The only people who claim to have an urgent reason are people trying to scam me.

You are basically agreeing to this suggestion it seems, there are people that don't want any friend requests and you tell them to just hit ignore, all this option does it take away the middleman of doing that and not allow anyone to request that person as a friend....

And yes just because there are 3rd party programs and add-ons for browser does not mean that those at Valve should not make their platform even better with QoL updates or additions...

If a business / game / program relies on others to fix or make something better it's not a good way of doing things.

Friend requests cannot be used to make some public insults or defamation. Profile comments is something other people see.

I can name several, but I think you're mixing legit with urgent, these words aren't synonims. A legit reason is e.g. if a person is your friend IRL and wants to keep connected on Steam. Another one is someone who enjoyed playing with you in a multiplayer game and wants to play with you again.
You may have your own legit reasons to decline these requests, though. Did I answer your question?

There are addons to fit very specific tastes. I believe there are plugins that help you scam people, but that's not a behavior Valve wants to encourage.

To be honest, I have nothing against this suggestion, but I'm trying to explain it's unlikely to be a priority for Valve. It doesn't help to sell more games or to make people aware of new games (it may even harm these goals a little). And those who desperately need this feature have already found an alternative

Same here, would be a nice feature to have.

What could be that important that you have to request a stranger to befriend you?
