they're emotes. like emojis. they aren't meant to be huge. they are a bit bigger when used by themselves, but in a string of text they keep the same size of the text.
If Valve provide and option so we can disable or set a max size for them. Then I won't object as I'd just select they were smaller anyway.
See on the forum it brings up the full size pic if you hover over it, but not in chat.
Use a new phone of an unfamiliar brand or IM application and get sent emojis. You'll see new faces but have no idea what they mean without checking. Being the size of a house wouldn't clarify some of them. Once you know what they mean you can tell the difference from the small versions.
Didn't know that. Shows how often I bother trying to find out what they all mean. I know plenty that don't know, both for Steam and phones, IM apps that just select them on a feeling of what they think they mean. Not always to a good result ha.
As well as posting emoticons without text makes them appear bigger
For example:
if you have this emoticon, use this in chat:

Ah yes I see.
"can be made bigger by hovering over them"
On the desktop version of CHAT when you hover over them it comes out the same size.
You say there is no problem, I'm saying there is How will a problem be fixed if people won't accept there is a problem.
But I would not expect Valve to listen. All those big companies are long deaf to their customers requests and know better about everything. Giving people choice is not in trends these days. These days we are told what we should feel and how we should think. So, yeah...
