It isn't the 1990s anymore.
Was profile music famous in community forums in the 1990s?

It was on websites in general. Same with autoplaying ads with sound. Both are dumb ideas because if I am listening to my music I am going to close your website/profile when music/ads are trying to play. One of the reasons why I use an adblocker. There are still some who have not learned the lesson yet.

Yup, I hated to not know what tab I had open that auto played stuff. Sometime I could never find what was playing and had to close my entire brower before.

Mysterious I had a 56k Modem and this never happened to me at all.
I actually don't believe that the predecessor, the 28.8k connection was able to transfer so much content for streaming in multiple tabs!
PS: There was no broadband so people paid per MegaByte back in the days, there was no background music on homepage, because this would be too much even for the 56k connection.
But thank you for your fantasy stories, you expierenced a parallel 90s universe I guess.

A good .mid takes hardly 10 kb per minute playtime. It's the more complex formats like mp3, wav or ogg, that blow up the bitrate. I had a website in the early 2000s with Turrican soundtrack as background music. Went without any kind of delay through 56k.

On the other hand, I agree with anyone, who thinks, this is a bad idea for Steam.

P.S.: Just browsed through my collection. Got a MIDI file of 20.7 Kilobyte here, playtime 3:21. If your 90s modem could not have handled this in realtime, your phone line has broken down.

P.P.S.: And if someone could explain a 90s internet user, what these mysterious "tabs" are...

Along abusing animated GIFs, frames, tables for layout, the blink text and websites with pink text over yellow background... Lots of bad eyesight es caused by looking at 90s webpages.

Actual style books are written over the design mistakes made during the 90s. That's why music on a website is nowadays considered bad nettiquete. Even browsers have added functionality to tell users which tab is the one with the annoying sound.

Unfortunately is a bad habit that's kind of coming back due to intrusive ads autoplaying videos.

@Tito Your points are valid but let's not act like steam cares about web standards. "Community Hub" is like THE most standard-violating design possible.
