Add game I ALREADY own to wishlist, to buy for friends
I want to add a game I already own to the wishlist to watch for future Steam sales, so that I can buy it at a discount for my friends.

As of May 2020 it is not possible to do this, confirmed in a discussion with Steam Support.

A better way to track sales (from several sources) is using isthereanydeal[isthereanydeal.com]

It allows you to set what prices/percentage limit to send a notification ... and includes games included in bundles.

Yeah, I can't see this ever being a thing because it's entirely linked to your account.

Doing so would ,ean you have the ability to rebuy a game you already own too, and that would be a massive recipe for disaster.

So sorry but your best bet is like StickyPawz says - use another method for wishlisting. I use good old fashioned pen and paper mostly.

This doesn't make sense. I can already "rebuy a game I already own", as long as I send it to someone else. All that the OP asks is to be notified when that game is on a discount.

Yes, you can already buy a game you own AS A GIFT.

What I was pointing out is that when you go to the store normally, any game you own has the "buy" option removed and "play" put there instead. It's done for a reason - people forget what they own, or any other sort of mistake.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong. But it does happen.

So I'm drawing your attention to the fact that adding the ability to add an owned game to your watchlist would need something like this removing in some way, so people would likely ♥♥♥♥ up and rebuy stuff they already own.

Now you can say they're stupid, or that shouldn't happen, but it doesn't change the fact it will happen.

So I cant' see it happening for that reason. It seems a bit of a niche request with a high potential of issues and not much benefit.

And I can't see Valve restructuring everything drastically to allow this.

That's it.

Definitely I'm either too stupid or not high enough to follow. I'll just drop it.

No, that's absolutey fine. I admire your honesty. That's often woefully lacking on here.

Let me try to explain it better.

The wishlist system is DIRECTLY tied to the store. It's the same data, the same system. OK with me so far?

Now, as such when you buy a game, your account relfects how the store displays that game in future. You can check this easily - go to the store page of any game you already own. Note that the place where the BUY button should be it is now the PLAY button instead.

This is deliberately set up this way to stop people buying games they already own by accident (yes, it happens more often than you might realise).

And that is DIRECTLY hooked into your wishlist, which is why the games you've bought are removed from your wishlist.

So, if the wishlist were adapted to still show games you owned, then that would require alteration of something in this system, which would mean it would likely make it so that the buttong that is "PLAY in the store page no longer says that.

In other words, you can't alter one without the other. So leaving this on your wishlist would likely make it so that you can rebuy games you already own and that's going to cause issues.

You see?

Steam already allows you to add games you own to your cart directly from their store page. When you try and check out though, it will only give you the option to purchase as a gift. I'm not seeing any sweeping changes that need to be made other than allowing the wishlist functionality despite being owned.

Really, because it clearly hooks into the same thing, otherwise why does the game get removed from your wishlist when you buy it?

The point remains that should this be altered so games you already own stay on the wishlist, it would have to affect SOMETHING to do with the same flag or check that governs you not being able to buy the game again.

^That's for a game I own. As you can see a frame has been added that tells me it's in my library, a review space etc. The add to cart is still there per usual though it's just been shifted down due to this new frame as well as indicating you would be buying as a gift.

^And this is what it will look like at checkout. The purchase for myself option is greyed out and it informs you, you own the product.

Nothing needs to change other than owned objects still having the wishlist flag. Ideally though, you would want an indicator that you own the game directly on the wishlist, but not absolutely necessary.

Ah in that case, I stand corrected. You are right.

Apologies.

Ignore the crunchy one, here is how you add an item you already own to your wishlist, its really quite simple.

Open the store page and click that you want to buy the item.
It will show you your cart, noting that you already own the game.

In the box with the game, near the upper right corner next to the price if you over the mouse there you will get a small box with THREE DOTS. Click on this.

You will get some options, one of which is ADD to my WISHLIST.

To crunchyfrog... just because you don't know how doesn't mean it isn't possible, perhaps in the future stick to lecturing people about what you know for sure, instead of what you assume can't be done.

Sidenote: I realize this is several years after the original discussion but this is not new its been that way for a while. So no lectures about how it changed since the original discussion please because this predates your discussion.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
