Account name, the one you use to log in. It can not be changed at all.

There's always one of you... I'm not talking about the username you can change. I'm talking about the one you login to Steam with.

Why does it matter then? Nobody else can see it besides you..

No one sees your login name if thats what you are talking about, only you and you should not be giving it out to anyone or any website at all.

As for your Steam name, you can change that anytime you want.

And if you had bothered to use the search feature you would have discovered that this has been suggested many times already and its not going to happen because Valve screwed up at the start with steam and too many things rely on it name not changing so it would be very complicated and more then likely screw up a LOT of stuff.

It would also make recovering accounts harder if a high jacker got in and changed everything.

And there's always one of you who cannot seem to use the search feature.
No one but you, Valve employees (and the scammers that you give your credentials away to) can see the username of the account, there is no need to change it and this topic has been brought up far too many times. It's tied to many things and would mess up stuff more than it would help.

It'd be great to make this changeable.

It'd really help anyone who's had their account compromised before.

Well that's also why you change your password and have two step verification with your phone number on it, and it also helps if most people don't be stupid and go sign their Steam account into other sites....

Fixed.

Nope. Before blaming the individual, make sure to do your research.

Specifically, let's take a trip back to July 2015.

(there's more if you just search july 2015 steam password recovery)

TL;DR
You could submit a blank code for password reset, meaning that anyone whose login name was known or could be guessed could find themselves losing access to their account.

I've experienced losing access to my account before, and it was precisely becaose of this.

Then maybe you should create a long and creative password and that wouldn't of happened..

My password wasn't guessed. My password was reset without anyone knowing what it was.

Have you ever tried doing a password reset on Steam?

Password resets are supposed to require a code that Steam e-mails you. But before that bug was fixed, you could just enter nothing for the code and then change the password to anything you liked.

The point of the code is to confirm that you're the real user by checking whether you have access to the user's e-mail address. But because the code could be left blank, this means all you needed to change someone's password (and kick them offline when you try to login, btw) was to know their login name.

So, basically, since we're talking about the account name being compromised, AmsterdamHeavy is still right, since that bug didn't expose names...

Tell me where Steam users are advised that they should be protecting their login name as a second password.
