It'd also help if the Steam emoticons were supported on mobile. They are not. As such sometimes I can't tell what someone is saying (imaging) until I get home.
However, if I update to the Steam client beta, the 11.0 series emojis do appear properly.
:)
AFAIK Steam doesn't use a specific webfont but your bogstandard Arial, Verdana, sans-serif configuration. Emojis are just glyphs, so they need to be supported by the used font. Similar to some fonts only having ACII characters and already caving in on extended ASCII.
So it depends on what specific font the browser uses.
In that case, the Steam client could also have a font setting for the chat client, at least in a config. To be fair, I don't know if that it doesn't.
