A proper, full color Emoji font, please.
Emojis are now a commonly supported symbol communication system across most platforms mobile and PC. The version 12.0 set is available, featuring the orangutan 🦧, the onion 🧅, the banjo 🪕 and many more. During 2019, major platforms will start supporting Emoji 11.0, including Microsoft, Google, Apple and Facebook. The 11.0 series includes emoji such as the hippopotamus 🦛, the cupcake 🧁 and the lab coat 🥼.

Steam chat's emoji support does not include 5.0 set (to clarify, 5.0 immediately preceded to 11.0), and it still uses (ugly) monochrome emojis when colored emoji are standard. (🏳️‍🌈)

Please update Steamchat emoji support to include color emoji up to version 11.0.

Thank you.

I rather they would ban this stuff and get rid of their own emoticons. Nothing beats old school smilies. :)

I grew up old school (pre-emoters, even text-based ones). But I have a lot of friends who have adopted the contemporary lingo including full emoji usage.

It'd also help if the Steam emoticons were supported on mobile. They are not. As such sometimes I can't tell what someone is saying (imaging) until I get home.
Hmm. It seems perhaps there's a little variability. I'm using macOS 10.14.4 and the 🏳️‍🌈emoji does appear coloured in the chat. Tthe 11.0 series examples you give don't appear at all except as boxes.

However, if I update to the Steam client beta, the 11.0 series emojis do appear properly.
emojis suck in my opinions

Curiously, I get none of the emojis (including the rainbow flag 🏳️‍🌈) on my steam page (which is the current Beta available for Windows 7). However the rainbow flag does appear on Firefox. None of the others, though.

AFAIK Steam doesn't use a specific webfont but your bogstandard Arial, Verdana, sans-serif configuration. Emojis are just glyphs, so they need to be supported by the used font. Similar to some fonts only having ACII characters and already caving in on extended ASCII.

So it depends on what specific font the browser uses.
cinedine I'd have to research it. It seems odd, given that current emoji sets are full color, and fonts are typically monochrome (with the color externally defined by the application). The old Unicodes were monochrome.

In that case, the Steam client could also have a font setting for the chat client, at least in a config. To be fair, I don't know if that it doesn't.
PS: Happy Unicorn Day! 🦄
