If someone is just adding "ok" or "well?" or "+1" or something along those lines, its considered spam.
If they add a bunch of stuff that really has nothing to do with the topic it is spam.
No real need to add no necro-posting.
I've seen a couple of threads that were 2 years old and someone posted in them because something that was asked for in the OP had finally been provided so information was added for anyone who was subscribed to it and for anyone that finds it in the future while searching. I thought it was strange to see a 2 year old thread, but once I seen the new post it made sense.
You searched and avoided making duplicate topics just like they asked you to.
It’s the most common cause of necro posts 90% of people had no idea they just revived a 2 year old thread.
If people stopped and read stuff there is a chance they wouldn't need to add anything. But again many times its a "+1 to what the op said" or something like it and that adds nothing to the thread.
Post in old thread: "LOL Y U NECRO!"
You can't win.
It does lead to a lot of people railing on you for "necroing"; which can be obnoxious enough for the thread to get locked.
Yes because as we know, people on steam always read stuff even when its right in front of them....
There's a number of cases where people unknowingly revive an old thread without meaning to do so.
Hell, I'm an experienced user and even I sometimes do that.
A warning saying "This thread hasn't been posted in in at least 120 days. Make sure you're adding something meaningful to the thread. Thanks!" would at least give people like myself pause before posting.
Honestly though, don't suppose it'll help.
recently someone necroed my old thread where i posted about having done the work to find out the numbers of the expert grid in ffx , i dont mind that at all , one thread has my picture linked anyway but that way more see it
