Perhaps for Skyrim Special Edition. And fortunately that was a big enough title that it played out that way.
But there have been quite a few other games where this was not the case. Like just today I randomly found a new updated (remastered-ish) release of a game in my library that is from a title that I already owned. But the updated version is a separate game.
And i'm going to defo play it, since I really liked the original. But the point is unless I had randomly stumbled across that new game in my library, there is no way I would have known it was even there or that it had even been released.
Steam > Settings > Interface >>> Notify me about...
You can check it by clicking on "View" at the top and choose "Update News."
Yeah appreciate the suggestion, but i've had that feature enabled for quite some time.
And unfortunately the "Update News" dialog window is very hit and miss, maybe 1 out of 10 titles displayed there will have any relevance to my library, or associated interests (eg followed games / wish-listed games / similarly tagged games etc).
So that delivery method is really not proving very effective at all for informing users about automatic free library additions.
It did for Skyrim: SE and Bioshock Remasterd for me.
They don't.
Then that is something that falls on the game devs to do, since the system is already there for them to publish said news.
Forgot to add also i Won a Game from the The Video Game Awards and it was Emailed to my account that i won and that it was auto added to my account and didn't have to do a thing. So there is a system in place they just need to allow Devs/Publishers the tools to add Emails or Popups when something is added to our accounts ;)
I'd rather not let the game devs send out emails to users. That doesn't seem like a good idea from how some shady devs acted in the past.

The pop-ups are managed by Valve.
And it isn't a solution if you have them turned off or don't use Steam on a daily base.
Even if the "handshake" approval (really just a click without paying any mind to what it was that they approved) is made, Valve tends to let things slip up quite a bit before catching on.
But the game devs must already have said news (especially the picture) given to Valve in the first place.
And many users also opt out of emails too.
Yeah exactly. Just been going through my library some more, and just found even more games that I had no idea had even been added rofl...
Steam has made some really useful QOL changes over the years, and this is one that is also needed.
Yeah I don't think they need to go so far as including every single addition to your library, since you already get a receipt e-mail when you purchase a game. But with games that just get added, like from promotions or just as free separate remastered versions, it would be nice to at least get an e-mail saying "xyz game has been added to your game library free of charge."
Because come on guys if a game gets added to your library, and you already have a big library, and there is nothing in the news feed about the release of the game, how are you supposed to know that game is now in your game library ???
