Please ban or limit gifs on store pages.
Its ridiculous, this happens SO OFTEN now. Developers stopped putting videos on their pages and just drop gifs all over the place. Now half the time I load store pages I spend 5 minutes loading it only to fail and end up with a hundred images all white and have to Ctrl F5 to restart the process from scratch.

What Valve needs to do is prohibit incorrect file extensions. Detect Gifs that are named jpg and delete them or re-convert them back to jpg. Don't let developers fake a gif anymore. Limit gifs uploaded to the store pages to 3MB in size. Allow animated PNGs, or "apng" which is simply ".png", limited to 3MB in size.

Limit the total page size in images to 20MB, thats a max of almost 7 animated images, but you must also take into account the images in the top bar which Steam also tries to download to your machine all simultaneously but at least those are in jpg format and would normally be between 200-600kb allowing 34 images at 600kb in size, which would be good for pages that have 2 gifs near max size and still have 23 images near max size.

Thats more than fair, you shouldn't need more than 20 MB to show case how good your game is. Stop giving developers pages that exceed 100MB, force them to upload the images to your site with size limits preventing them from making store pages unloadable. This isn't the year 3000, we don't all have magic high speed super internet to load everything instantly regardless of size.

Or perhaps you can set your site up to not start downloading every single image the web page shows as soon as you load it but I still wouldn't want to download 100MB to look at a damn store page which does actually still happen on occasion. You can not enforce a trusted limit. You must automate your system to prevent developers from bypassing it in any way at all.

Please, for the love of god fix this. I'm so sick of half the steam store being pages that take up gigs of bandwidth just going through one queue.

I know I'll get attacked for my post, people with high speed internet will come here and ♥♥♥♥ on my topic by saying "get better internet lulz". Hell I'll bet some game devs will come here too and say its my fault or whatever. I ignored this problem for long enough, and am tired of it. Seriously Valve, I know for a fact you can automate this and set these limits without problem.

Gifs are essentially Autoplay videos that we can't stop from playing. I have the bandwidth and no cap but they still annoy the hell out of me. If it plays it should be with the photos and the videos at the top of the store page and disabled by default.
I wouldn't want gifs to be banned from being used, but to make them not auto-play when you open the page would be beneficial, and if you want to play them you just click or hover over them to play like others sites do.

well, after reading your full text, it would indeed make sense.

i got fast internet, but i consider the gifs on the storepages as pretty useless and annoying too.
not for the loading time, but they just distract me.
I used the title to get people to click it more. If you word it in an intelligent way, people skip it. But if you word it in a way that sounds like something they'd hate to see happen, they'll click to view and sometimes reply without actually reading. :P

I think the gifs can be good depending on how they are done, but some devs just record a video of their game and convert it to a crappy gif and stick 10+ on their page.

The way images work, you can't stop a gif from loading. But if Valve would restrict the sizes, it'd be a little better. apng would be far better too.

Actually what they could do is enable webgl type stuff and it would allow video clips, where you could do these 30MB gifs in only 3MB and it would be less stressful on your net as it might actually prioritize better.

That's the problem with GIFs. There's no play on click. WEBMs would work though. Also be a lot smaller than GIFs. While APNG is interesting, it lacks support in browsers.

And yeah, it annoys me a lot as well.

Disable GIFs on store pages
This is an issue that's getting more and more annoying with each game whose store page I browse.

Can we get an option that disables loading of gifs altogether? They're a waste of bandwidth and add a massive delay to the loading of a game's store page, primarily because the client will always wait till it's done downloading them BEFORE downloading the ACTUAL screenshots from, you know, the part of the page that's actually supposed to be used for the game's media.

That's of course not enough touching upon the matter that a major company is still using the gif format in this day and age. A format so outrageously unoptimized and inefficient.
Whatever browser you use. There are extensions for that.

One for Opera browser for example https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/gif-blocker/

Agree, would be nice to have them removed or a way to stop them.

Does not help those who use the client.

There was another thread on this and I agree to this, I never use the Steam client to do much since it takes a while especially store pages with gifs. An option to disable them or take them off completely would be nice.

Thanks for the answer but I'm already aware of those. The thing is I browse the store on the steam client exclusively, not on a browser.

I would also like the option to, within the steam client, disable animated gifs as an account preference setting. Perhaps also the option to cycle once without looping, in addition to "on" or "off".

I don't visit steam's ecosystem outside of the required client.
Maybe they can offer a thin client not based on a browser, so that these sorts of issues don't plague us?

It's not like I launch steam to view animated ads. Making it unpleasant for me to spend money isn't going to keep me motivated to cycle through a queue or something during a sale.
Maybe that should be an option we have in our Steam Settings tab: de-animate gifs or any related FMV from actually playing unless we deliberately click on them.

Those of us on "regular internet", bandwidth isn't so much a concern.
But at times when I'm traveling and tethering off a smart phone for internet (because some hotel chains still don't realize their patrons want more than dial-up speed free wifi), phone plan data caps don't like animated-everythings in a dozen windows every time you go to another website.

I don't use the client because the steam browser is the worst browser in existence, almost as bad as Internut Exploder was before Microsuck renamed it to Edge.

All Valve needs to do is restrict images from being loaded off site. No embedding imgur links. Then force developers to upload their data to their store page accounts. Each image must fit within the limits given. .jpgs will be processed and re-encoded to jpg format with quality 90%. pngs will be processed and re-encoded to png format with compression level 9. gifs must be less than 10MB, and no more than a total of 20MB of gifs per store page. No more than 10MB of PNGs per store page. No more than 10MB of jpgs per store page. That means a developer can use -at most- 40MB. However they can also set a sky limit on total data on the store page limiting it to 25MB.
Years have passed, and I was wondering, is there an effective way yet to block repeatingly looped gifs and full motion video on store pages yet? Something clever besides using some other browser to navigate the store?

Normally I would just presume my opinion doesn't matter and that advertising is more important, but a guest here just threw up after seeing a bunch of full motion brightly colored looping animations--and you know -- I had to clean it up. AND minimize the window. It wasn't helpful in that the screen I am using is huge and intended for a group to crowd around, as opposed to a smalller laptop or desktop screen.

It seems reasonable that as a means of presenting advertisements without blocking them, that static versions of unanimated thumbnails or what have you--static images-- could be served as a placeholder made permanent for a user opting for that, instead of incessant full motion video (be it gifs or ideos or just new ways to show many frames in sequence...) even if it is implemented as a sort of handicap accessiblity feature.

(After a night of hard partying, sometimes, the less vertigo causing full motion experiences, the better!)
