Would be nice if people actually used the search feature before posting. The vast majority of people who respond to these threads HATE the idea of animated gifs for avatars.

Reasons for hating them...

Annoying.

Take longer to load on slow connections.

Takes up extra bandwidth thats expensive.

Makes it harder for Steam admins to do their job to remove ones that breaks the rules because it takes much longer to watch it to see what it breaks. 1 gif, not so bad, consider having to watch 500 10+ second gifts a day. And thats more then likely a low number as there are over 1 billion accounts on Steam and only around 400ish people that work at Valve, most of who do not do steam support.

I hate that Valve has introduced animated stuff for even just for special occasions. I find it all annoying. Thankfully I'm not one of these people with limited bandwidth or really slow connections. The most annoying part is people see the animated stuff and want to do custom stuff so more people are now posting that they want gifs for avatars and background and what ever else.

This is not geocities or myspace or any other of those places that allow stuff like that.

We can disagree on this bit. I love how much effort the Valve artists out into the sale events.

If it comes with the obligatory toggle and default state of OFF, I have no issues with it.

I don't see a problem with adding this, for those that don't want it, it shouldn't be too hard to implement a setting or option that will only display the first frame from a animated picture and ignores anything else, making it a static image again saving bandwidth, could be part of the web browser settings (like the low bandwidth mode for the library) and can work globally (Store, Workshop, Guides, Profiles etc.). I know it's almost like a new separate idea but still relating to OPs suggestion.

Don't get me wrong, the actual art is BEAUTIFUL and amazing looking. I just hate animated stuff because of all the reasons I mentioned.

If they ever do allow custom animated stuff they should have a way that it can all be turned off so that it doesn't even download and so that it never auto plays. It should also be off by default. I don't want to download or see the stuff. I have more important things to waste my unlimited bandwidth and no data caps on and so do many others who don't have unlimited bandwidth and do have data caps.

I doubt Valve would go for users animating their own profiles for the same reasons you suggest, it being a bit rubbish and mySpacey. I just don’t oppose people wanting something.

If (and it’s a very big IF) Valve were to allow it - absolutely a setting needed to prevent animated profiles sapping metered bandwidth, and to prevent our eyes bleeding from the terrible animations gamers would be using.

I suppose maybe the number 1 reason it wouldn’t happen is the lack of control Valve would have making profiles suitable for processing grunt on our GFX and CPU.

The forums would look like trash if this were allowed.

Off by default setting or a no go from me.

:qr:
It has to have a off setting at first and you have to manually toggle it on if you want it. But overall a no thanks for me as I said in the other countless posts on this.

As of now I have to use an add-on to stop them all over Steam from playing cause I use Steam in my browser for everything.

we all have to admit that without the problem of racist/sexual/bad animated profile pictures, it would be great to have

No it wouldn't

Even if everyones profile was a cute animated cat it would still,

1. Be annoying

2. Use more bandwidth/data/take time to load

Both points already mentioned above

The gifs on the store pages are bad enough when im browsing on the mobile app, they just usually have no reason to exist and make the pages take twice as long to load

ive had no problems loading pages with the gifs on the store, im sorry but i cant relate

No it would not because there are still lots of other problems, that have been mentioned many times.

There are also trolls that would post up images that could trigger epileptic seizures in some people. And the ones that will upload large gifs that never change just to cause people to use their bandwidth. Seriously there are people out there like that.
