Gender Neutrality and Steam Notif
I am a non-binary they/them individual

Today when logging in I noticed the persistent notification of a friend request said "person has added you to his or her friend list."

I feel as though this type of wording is absolutely uneccessary and could easily be amended to become more inclusive for all walks of life by simply saying

"person has added you to their friend list."

I'd say the message should be re-written entirely, as "(user) added you to his/her/their friends list" implies exactly what it says, except it's wrong; you're not actually on their friends list.

It should just say "(user) has sent you a friend request".
Yeah, this makes the most sense and future proofs it. Today, the correctness rule is one thing. and tomorrow it's something else. I'd also remove the "be" verb and simply say..

"Matt sent you a friend request."

A person is a singular individual. It is illogical to make it plural.
“They” is used everyday as a singular pronoun.
AustrAlien2010 27 października 2020 o 15:10
"My car their tires need replacing", is not proper spelling, is it? Because it is one car, not multiple.

Why not "it"? It, added you to it 's friendlist. Stephen King approves. That is less confusing than "their". Unless it has a multiple personality disorder, it can only be one.

Anyway. It is your language. So you may decide it. I'm just trying to make it as less confusing as possible. :steamhappy:

I don’t know why this needs explaining but you use “it” to refer to non-sentient objects...

“It” is dehumanising and isn’t really used in place of pronouns.

Here’s an example of “they/their/them” being used as a singular in everyday language:
“Mum, there’s someone at the door!”
“Go and ask them what they want.”

You realise you just proved my point, right?

I know one thing: the teacher is always right, and I am possitive, I already forgot my English classes years ago. So, I simply spell, whatever I think sounds right, and what seems the most logical to me. It is not like I have an army of English grammar teachers, helping me out here.

Maybe you are right. That could very well be. I simply do not know. Consult the English. They may know, how it is supposed to be written. It is their language after all.

I fear, I sort of developed my own language over the years, and I like it that way. We talk AustrAlien here, not English, by following the teachings of AustrAlienism. They should respect our beliefs. :steamhappy:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/usage-limericks/their

"Some people still prefer to use his when referring to a person of unspecified or unknown gender (“Every worker does his best”). However, many have moved on to his or her—a more inclusive, yet awkward phrase ("Every worker does his or her best"). Singular their solves this awkwardness ("Every worker does their best").

There is a long tradition in English of using plural pronouns (such as they, their, or them) for a singular character, rather than ascribing gender in a seemingly indeterminate fashion. "

Gender Neutrality in Friend Requests
Currently, if someone sends you a friend request the prompt is “x has added you to his or her friends list.” “His or her” is unnecessarily long; the proper grammar is “x has added you to their friends list.”

And yet the list above includes words you want prohibiting.

Did you miss HE, SHE, HIM, HER. HIS, HERS?

You want Gender Neutrality and fail to understand that violates the rights for others to call themselves male and female.

In other words (no pun intended) you would have to remove said words from dictionaries and language itself for neutrality to happen.

Please do not reply to this discussion. You are clearly uneducated and do not wish to be educated on basic grammar and socio-political issues.

Public thread. Open forum. You are in no position to dictate.

Uneducated? an Ad-Hominem thrown in.... never a good idea to attack the person.

Puzzle this one. My daughter's friend identifies as a female who is a lesbian. Gender Neutrality means she would only be able to identify as a lesbian.

Fact: Whether you identify as non-binary or gender neutral you can never escape your biological sex. Need treatment in a hospital, then be prepared to given drugs appropriate to your biological sex, not your definition of self.

Socio-political issues are a construct of SJW's whose sole purpose in life is to interfere with the lives of others whilst telling the world to **** off when it comes to their own personal life.

It's still singular ... it's just that the word also happens to be a plural possesive.

I am not confused at all.

When I do not know someone I ask who they are, what their name is. I never ask how they identify, what their sexuality is etc.

You on the other hand are doing what all SJW's do, correcting (wrongly) others to the detriment of society not the betterment of society.

And if you don't know their name? Not to mention that names are not always an indicator for gender. Less are gamer tags.

There is literally no issue by replacing it with "their" unless you don't know grammar. In which case you might run danger getting educated.
You are against it just to be against it and insult other people over it.

Great attitude.

If someone wants to be my friend on Steam they need to provide details as to who the hell they are and why we need to be friends.

There is no issue from your point of you.

There is an issue from my point of view which I outlined earlier.

More importantly you do not get to determine how I use language.

I am against it because I do not believe a change is necessary nor required. I do not need another reason.

The hysteria this issue causes among conservatives is bizarre; it’s clearly not the ‘SJWs’ blowing things out of proportion. Singular they is normal English, this suggestion is entirely beneficial, no downsides whatsoever. It’s not an attack on anyone’s rights, it’s just straight-up better communication.

No? That doesn’t make any sense at all. Nobody is suggesting women not be able to identify as women. This suggestion is about Valve discussing other people, not people discussing themselves.

That’s great, but Steam is not a hospital.

Just gonna point out you used "they" instead of "he or she". It's almost like it's normal to use less awkward grammar, now imagine someone being offended by your use of "they". I hope Valve decides to make this small change, which is a more natural phrase and more inclusive at the same time.
